A New York University student managed to track down a girl he was attracted to by using social media network Reddit.

According to NYU’s news blog NYU Local, a student who identified himself as “Tom” posted a request on Reddit saying he needed to find a female student with whom he shared an umbrella with on campus.

Tom said they exchanged first names, majors and hometown, but he forgot to ask for her contact details.

“She’s about 5’4" from what I could tell, skinny, brunette,” desperate Tom wrote last Wednesday in the NYU sub-Reddit, micro communities dedicated to specific topics.

Over 1,000 users came to Tom’s rescue and began rummaging the Internet for possible clues. One suggested that the mysterious crush was going to a building between the university and 5th Avenue, while others said Tom should go to the Facebook group for his class and search for her name.

Some warned Tom that his quest for lost love should not turn into something creepier. “Just don’t take the searching overboard. Know when to let it go,” wrote one user.

Days of painstaking search finally paid off Saturday when a Reddit user located the girl. Tom informed his helpers that he sent her the friend request and said he will deliver the results when new developments arise.

이 글이 올라오자 천명이 넘는 레딧 사용자들이 톰을 도와줬다. 한 사용자는 톰이 올린 일화를 통해 이 여성이 대학과 5번가 사이에 있는 건물에 갔던 것 같다고 추정했고, 다른 사용자는 톰에게 수업을 같이 듣는 사람들의 페이스북 그룹을 확인해보라고 충고했다.

그러나 몇몇 사람들은 짝사랑을 찾는 것은 좋지만 스토킹을 하지는 말라고 말했다. “포기할 때는 포기할 줄도 알아야 되요”라고 한 사용자는 적었다.

톰과 네티즌들은 노력 끝에 결국 이 여성을 찾아내는데 성공했다. 톰은 10일 글을 올려 다른 레딧 사용자의 제보로 짝사랑 상대를 찾아냈다며 “친구요청을 한 상태인데, 곧 후기를 올리겠다”고 밝혔다.
