British author Helen Fielding says she has started writing a sequel to 1996‘s “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and 1999‘s “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.”

The books and two film adaptations, starring Renee Zellweger as the titular heroine, were based on a newspaper column Fielding began writing in 1995.

“I’m having a lot of fun and it‘s very funny and it’s making me laugh,” Fielding told the BBC about returning to Bridget‘s story.

“After the unexpected success when it first came out, I was startled by the whole thing,” she said.

“When I first wrote it, I didn’t think anyone would read it. It was just a column in The Independent, so it was very easy to write and be very honest -- and then I got all self-conscious because I knew so many people would read it.”

Fielding said she was inspired to revisit her famous character in the spring of 2011.

“I had new stuff I wanted to say and things that were making me laugh,” Fielding told the BBC. “Things that didn‘t exist when I wrote the last ’Bridget,‘ like emails really, and texting, the way life is lived through texting and Twitter, and a whole new idea for a phase of her life. It’s more like, ‘Number of Twitter followers: 0. Still no followers. Still no followers’. But she has grown up. My life has moved on and hers will move on, too. She‘s still trying to give up [drinking and smoking], she’s still on a diet. She‘s trying a bit harder, and is a bit more successful, but she’s never really going to change.”

“Bridget Jones‘s Baby,” a film based on the last of Fielding’s newspaper columns, is in the works with Zellweger to return as Bridget, and Colin Firth and Hugh Grant to reprise their roles as her suitors Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver, the BBC said.

A stage musical is also being developed. (UPI)

영국 작가 헬렌 필딩(Helen Fielding)이 1996년 ’브리짓 존스의 일기’와 1999년 ’브리짓 존스: 열정과 애정’의 속편을 쓰기 시작했다고 밝혔다.

헤로인 르네 젤웨거로 대표되는 책과 두 편의 각색 영화는 1995년 필딩이 쓴 신문 칼럼에 바탕을 두고 있다.

"처음 썼을 때, 전 아무도 읽지 않을 거라 생각했어요. 디인디펜던트(The Independent)지의 칼럼일 뿐이었고 그래서 편하게 솔직하게 쓰기 쉬웠어요. 나중에 너무나 많은 사람들이 읽는다는 사실을 알고 자신감을 얻었죠."

필딩은 2011년 봄 그녀 작품 ’브리짓 존스의 일기’를 다시 읽다가 영감을 받았다고 한다.
