A South Korean disabled athlete has accused his coach of repeatedly physically assaulting him since 2010 and taking money to cover training expenses, officials said Tuesday.

Prosecutors in Incheon said they're investigating charges brought on Monday by a boccia athlete, identified only as A.

The athlete, who has cerebral palsy, competed at the London Paralympics this month, and alleged his coach abused him during the Paralympics as well as during earlier training sessions.

An aide to the disabled athlete said the abuse began two years ago.

"During the Paralympics, the coach one night returned home drunk and hammered the athlete's head with a light stand," the aide said. "He has been abusing him frequently since 2010. The athlete is ranked No. 1 in the world in boccia but couldn't win a medal because of injuries he sustained from the coach's abuse."

In addition to battery, the athlete charged that the coach took between 500,000 won and 1 million won (US$447 and $894) from him on several occasions, ostensibly to pay for practices.

A member of the athlete's family told Yonhap News Agency by phone that the coach has also beaten other athletes. (Yonhap News)

장애인 선수 '감독 폭행설' 진실은..

한 장애인국가대표 선수가 감독에게 폭행을 당했다는 의혹을 제기해 검찰이 수사에 나섰다.

보치아 장애인국가대표 선수 A(31)씨는 지난 17일 인천지방검찰청에 해당 종목 감독 B(42)씨를 폭행과 공갈혐의로 고소했다.

뇌성마비 1급 중증 장애인인 A씨는 지난 런던올림픽 기간은 물론 평소 훈련기간 에도 상습적으로 B씨에게 맞았다고 주장했다.

A씨의 한 관계자는 "이번 올림픽때 술에 취해 숙소에 들어온 감독이 스탠드로 A 씨를 때리고 무릎을 꿇게 했다"며 "지난 2010년부터 상습적으로 머리 등을 때렸다"고 주장했다.

이 관계자는 "현재 보치아 종목의 세계랭킹 1위인 A씨가 올림픽 당시 폭행으로 부상을 당해 메달 획득에 실패했다"고 덧붙였다.

또 훈련비용 명목으로 한번에 50만~100만원씩 수차례 B씨에게 금품을 빼앗겼다 고 주장했다.

A씨가 B씨에게 돈을 직접 송금하거나 가족을 통해 이체했다는 것이다.

A씨 외에 다른 선수들도 B씨에게 폭행을 당한 것으로 알려졌다.

A씨 가족은 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "내일(19일) 검찰에 다른 피해 선수들의 녹취록과 통장 내역 등 증거자료를 제출할 예정이다"고 말했다.

패럴림픽의 한 종목인 보치아(boccia)는 표적구와 공을 던져 표적구에 가까운 공의 점수를 합해 승패를 겨루는 경기로 뇌성마비 중증 장애인과 운동성 장애인만이 참가할 수 있다.
