Playing soccer without feet seems virtually impossible, but not for Gabriel Muniz.

The 11-year-old who was born without feet has been invited to train with F.C. Barcelona, local media reported.

Despite the obstacle, Gabriel managed to become one of the top players in his school. Although he wears a foot-ankle prosthesis for his everyday life, Gabriel chooses to discard them when he plays soccer.

Jose Lopes, Gabriel’s P.E. coach, believes that Gabriel will be able to create opportunities for himself and others.

“The disability only exists inside our heads and he is proving it to everyone; he is challenging the social norms. To this day there isn’t a Paralympics 11-a-side football team, but Gabriel is showing this will have to change, because he wants to play 11-a-side football,” he said.

After Gabriel’s story was featured on Brazil‘s most popular sports show on TV Globo network, he was invited to participate in Barcelona’s summer training camp in Saquarema, just outside Brazil’s capital.

When he excelled during this camp, Barcelona scouts invited him to travel to Barcelona’s academy in September, where he will get a chance to meet his hero Lionel Messi.

“When he arrived there [Barcelona’s summer training camp], no one believed in him. But he proved to everyone there, he can go head to head with any other boy,” Lopes said,

어머니 뭄 산드라는 “돌이 지나기 전부터 걸어 다녔고 넘어질까 봐 걱정해 뒤를 따라다녔지만 한 번도 넘어지는 법이 없었다”고 말했다.

친구인 루카스 산토스는 “기술이 대단하다”며 “볼 다툼과 패스를 잘하고 경기를 어떻게 풀어갈지 아는 친구”라고 거들었다.

무니스는 현재 리우데자네이루 주의 사쿠아레마에 있는 축구 학교에 다니고 있다.

바르셀로나는 무니스의 기량과 사연을 전해듣고 유소년 캠프에 그를 초청했다.

무니스는 자신의 우상인 아르헨티나 골잡이 리오넬 메시(바르셀로나)를 만날 기회를 잡았다며 흥분하고 있다.

영국 데일리메일은 무니스가 정상급 선수로 성장하기는 어려울 것이라고 스스로 판단해 절단 장애인을 위한 축구의 세부종목이 패럴림픽에 신설되기를 희망한다고 보도했다.
