At the New National Gallery in Berlin, an odd piece of art is being exhibited. Martin Gostner, an Austrian artist, named his work “The Oriel of the Blue Horses” -- made up of four piles of blue artificial horse manure.

Gostner explained that he is paying tribute to Franz Marc’s painting, “The Tower of Blue Horses.”

In 1937, the Nazis took Marc’s painting, for the reasoning that it is “un-German” and “degenerated.” The painting’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Each of the four piles in Gostner’s work symbolize each horse in Marc’s painting. The piles are to make visitors imagine blue horses trotting around the gallery.

The curator of the gallery said, “What would happen if the painting still lived, if there were a sign of it, and the horses were to come by here?”

Gostner’s work is in honor of art pieces that were destroyed or confiscated by the Nazis because they had Jewish or Bolshevik influences. A tacit message is given that the missing art works still may be retrieved.

Visitors were surprised by Gostner’s work and said it was “exotic and foreign.”

Art works hidden by the Nazis started to reappear after the Second World War. At the end of 2010, sculptures were found during underground construction in Berlin.

“Perhaps other works are still hidden away out there," a curator at the gallery said. "Many could still come to light.”

묘한 생김새의 미술전시물 호기심 ‘폭발’


독일 베를린에 위치한 뉴 내셔널 갤러리에는 올 여름 이색적인 조형물이 전시된다. 오스트리아 미술가인 마틴 고스트너의 작품인 “파란 말의 창문”은 파랗게 칠한 말똥 모양의 구조물 네 개로 이루어져 있다.

고스트너는 자신의 작품이 프란즈 마르크의 그림인 “파란 말로 이루어진 탑”을 기리기 위한 작품이라고 설명했다.

1937년, 나치는 표현주의자인 마르크의 작품을 “독일스럽지 않다”, “퇴폐적이다”라는 이유로 가져갔다. 지금까지도 “파란 말로 이루어진 탑”이 파괴되었는지 어딘가에 숨겨져 있는지는 알 수 없다.

고스트너의 작품에서 각각의 말똥 모양 구조물은 마르크의 그림 속 각각의 말들을 상징한다.

말똥 모양의 구조물이 미술관에 놓여 있는 것은 살아 움직이며 미술관 곳곳을 돌아다니는 모습을 연상케 한 것이다.

미술관의 큐레이터는 “만약 마르크의 그림이 무사히 돌아와서 이곳에 오게 된다면 어떨까요?”라고 물었다.

이 말똥 모양의 구조물들은 나치가 유대인이나 볼셰비키가 관여했다고 생각하여 망가뜨리고 숨긴 작품들을 생각나게 한다. 잃어버린 작품들을 다시 되찾을 수 있다는 암묵적인 메시지를 주고 있는 셈이다.

고스트너의 작품을 본 미술관 관람객들은 놀라는 모습을 보였다. “새롭고 낯설다,”고 말하는 사람도 있었다.

나치가 숨겨놓은 미술품들은 제 2차 세계 대전 이후 조금씩 세상에 나오기 시작했다. 특히2010년 말에는 베를린 지하 공사 중에 많은 조각상이 발굴되기도 했다. 

이 미술관의 큐레이터는 “아직 찾지 못한 많은 작품들이 다른 곳에 숨겨져 있을 수 있다”며 “세상에 나올 작품이 아직 많을 수 있다”고 말했다.
