With global population and food prices rising rapidly, humankind may have to depend on some unconventional food supplies like insects in the future, according to a report on BBC magazine.

“Rising prices mean we are now starting to see the return of meat as a luxury. As a result we are looking for new ways to fill the meat gap,” said food futurologist Morgaine Gaye during an interview with the magazine. “Things like crickets and grasshoppers will be ground down and used as an ingredient in things like burgers.”

The insects are an ideal alternative to meat because they provide just as much nutrition and protein while costing lot less to raise, according to a study by Wageningen University in the Netherlands, Also, insects have lower greenhouse gas emissions than cattle.

The Dutch government has already spent 1 million euros (1.39 billion won) trying to get insects into mainstream diets.

Gaye pointed out that one of the biggest obstacles in humans living off insects is their image. While insects are regarded as food in some parts of the world, most people are revolted by the idea of eating them.

Gaye suggested using the words like “mini-livestock” to refer to insects to minimize repulsion.

Other alternative food supply introduced by BBC included ‘sonic-enhanced food’, a food that is eaten while listening to music designed to enhance its taste, algae and lab-grown meat.

‘미래엔 곤충 버거가 식탁에 오를지 몰라’

네덜란드 워게닝겐 대학 연구진에 따르면 곤충들은 기존의 가축들보다 키우는 비용은 적게 들지만 동일한 양의 영양분과 단백질을 제공해주기 때문에 대안식량으로 적합하다고 한다.

또한 곤충들은 탄소 배출량이 비교적 적기 때문에, 가축들의 탄소 가스 배출에 의한 온실효과 역시 줄어들 것으로 기대된다.

네덜란드 정부는 이미 곤충을 주류 식단에 포함시키는데 1백만 유로 (한화 약 13억 9천만원)을 투자한 상태이다.

게이는 그러나 인류가 본격적으로 곤충을 주식으로 삼기 위해서는 곤충들에 대한 이미지 개선이 필수라고 지적했다. 일부 지역에서는 귀뚜라미, 애벌레 등을 먹기도 하지만, 대부분의 사람들은 곤충을 혐오식품으로 간주하고 있기 때문이다.

게이는 곤충에 대한 혐오감을 줄이기 위해 ‘소형 가축’등의 단어를 쓸 것을 제안했다.

매거진에서 제안한 또 다른 대체식품으로는 ‘음파향상 식품’, 실험실에서 제조한 인조고기, 해조류가 있었다. 이 중 음파향상 식품이란 특정 음악을 들으며 음식을 먹으면 맛이 더 좋게 느껴진다는 이론에 따른 식품으로 관련된 다양한 연구가 진행 중이다.
