“The Weight,” a new South Korean film starring veteran actor Jo Jae-hyun, has been invited to a non-competitive section of this year‘s Venice International Film Festival, its local distributor said Wednesday.

The movie will be presented in the “Venice Days” section of the 69th film festival set to open on Aug. 29, New said.

The drama portrays joys and sorrows of human life through a man (played by Jo) with a painful personal history.

Its director Jeon Kyu-hwan has been invited to more than 30 overseas film festivals with “Varanasi,” his “town series” -- “Mozart Town,” “Animal Town,” and “Dance Town” -- and other films.

“The Weight” is set to open in local theaters in the second half of this year. (Yonhap News)

한국 최초 ’베니스 데이즈’ 부문 초청 영화

조재현 주연, 전규환 감독의 영화 ‘무게’(한국명 가제. 영문명 ‘The weight’)가 제69회 베니스 영화제 ‘베니스 데이즈’ 부문에 초청됐다고 국내 배급사 뉴가 25일 전했다.

‘베니스 데이즈’는 칸 영화제의 ‘감독 주간’에 해당하는 비경쟁 부문이다.

한국영화가 베니스 영화제의 이 부문에 초청되기는 이번이 처음이라고 뉴 측은 설명했다.

‘무게’는 인간이 짊어져야 할 삶의 아픔과 애환을 그린 영화로, 배우 조재현이 아픔을 지닌 주인공을 연기했다.

전규환 감독은 ‘모차르트 타운’ ‘애니멀 타운’ ‘댄스 타운’ 등 타운 시리즈와 ‘바라나시’ 등의 작품으로 스페인 그라나다 영화제 대상, 미국 댈러스 영화제 대상 수상을 비롯해 30여 곳 이상의 해외 영화제에 초청된 바 있다.

‘무게’는 올 하반기 국내 개봉될 예정이다.
