Spain's Rafael Nadal, who won the men's singles gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, Thursday withdrew from the 2012 Games in London.

Nadal, ranked No. 3 in the world, cited physical problems for his decision to skip the Summer Games in London. The Olympic tennis events will be contested at Wimbledon's grass courts where Nadal was a surprise second-round upset victim last month.

"I am not in the right physical condition to compete at the London Olympics and for this reason I will not travel as arranged with the Spanish delegation," Nadal said.

He said his withdrawal would allow "one of my (Spanish) teammates who is better prepared than me take my place and compete to the best of his ability."

Spanish officials had announced that Nadal would be the country's flag-bearer at the Opening Ceremonies in London.

Nadal said: "Today is one of the saddest days in my career. Carrying the flag for Spain at the Opening Ceremony was set to be one of the biggest honors, one of the most special moments for me. For this reason I hope you can understand how difficult it has been for me to take this decision."(UPI)

2008 테니스 금메달 나달, 런던행 포기


지난 2008년 올림픽 남자 테니스 금메달리스트인 스페인의 라파엘 나달이 2012년 런던 올림픽 출전을 포기했다.

세계 랭킹 3위인 나달은 건강상의 이유로 런던 행을 포기했다. 이번 올림픽 테니스 경기는 세계 유일의 메이저 잔디 코트인 윔블던 코트에서 개최된다. 윔블던 코트는 지난 달 열린 윔블던 테니스 대회에서 그가 2회전 탈락해 팬들에게 충격을 안겨 준 장소이다. 

“올림픽을 치를 컨디션이 아니기에 스페인 대표단과 함께 가지 못할 것이다.”

그는 자신의 기권으로 자신보다 더 준비된 스페인 선수가 제 몫을 하고 최대의 기량을 펼쳐 보일 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.

스페인은 런던 올림픽 개막식에서 스페인 국기를 들 기수로 나달을 선정했었지만 대타를 구하게 됐다.

나달은 “내 인생에서 가장 슬픈 날이다. 올림픽에서 우리 국기를 드는 것은 큰 영광이고, 내게 있어 가장 특별한 순간이 될 수 있었다. 이 같은 결정을 내리기까지 힘들었다는 것을 이해해주기를 바란다”고 했다.
