“Deranged” tops box office

July 9, 2012 - 17:37 By Korea Herald
“Deranged” (Yeongasi), starring actor Kim Myeong-min, topped the local box office by selling over 1 million tickets in five days.

According to data from the Korean Film Council, “Deranged” has sold 1.32 million tickets since its release on Thursday.

The film’s tickets sales were similar to those of “Nameless Gangster: Rules of the time,” directed by Yoon Jong-bin, and “The Avengers,” a Hollywood superhero movie.

“Deranged” proved its popularity by defeating “The Amazing Spider-Man,” a major Hollywood blockbuster this summer season.

“The Amazing Spider-Man,” which was in first place at the box office last weekend, came in second with 386,618 tickets. “A Letter to Momo,” directed by Hiroyuki Okiura who produced “The Spirited Away,” ranked third with 48,658 tickets.

However, it is unclear if “Deranged” will maintain its lead as Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster, “The Dark Knight Rises,” is scheduled to be released on July 19. The new Batman movie is showing a high ticket reservation with 67 percent of people who booked movie tickets going to see the Batman movie.

“Deranged” and “The Amazing Spider-man” trailed with 11 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
