Eight South Koreans who went missing after their helicopter crashed into a mountain in Peru last week are presumed to have been killed, officials said Saturday. 

The Peruvian military and police conducted an aerial search and discovered the wreckage of the helicopter at about 4,950 meters above sea level near Coline in southern Peru, according to an official at the South Korean Embassy in Lima.

All 14 people on board, including the South Koreans and the pilot, are presumed to have been killed in the crash, the official quoted a Peruvian police official as saying.

In a phone call, Peruvian Interior Minister Wilber Calle also told South Korean Ambassador to Lima Park Hee-kwon the missing helicopter was found broken in two pieces after apparently crashing into a rock face, and there appeared to be no survivors, the embassy official said on condition of anonymity.

An overland rescue team of Peruvian police officers located the wreckage of the ill-fated helicopter from a distance of about 1 kilometer, as they could not go nearer due to rough terrain and bad weather, the official said.

Peruvian rescue officials plan to resume their search for the missing people after daybreak Sunday, the official added.

The helicopter went missing Wednesday while returning from a trip to a potential hydropower plant site near Mazuco in southeastern Peru. The South Koreans on board were employees of Samsung C&T, the Korea Water Resources Corp., the Korea Engineering Consultants Corp. and Seoyeong Engineering. (Yonhap News)

페루 실종 헬기 한국인 탑승자 '전원 사망'

6일(현지시간) 페루에서 한국인 8명 등 승객 14명을 태운 채 실종됐던 헬리콥터가 9일 당국에 발견됐다.

현지 당국은 실종 헬기가 산과 충돌해 한국인들을 비롯한 탑승객 전원이 사망한 것으로 보고 있다.

페루 경찰과 군 당국은 이날 실종 헬기가 있을 것으로 보이는 지역을 공중 수색 하다 마마로산 산 해발 4천950ｍ 지점에서 사고 헬기 잔해를 찾아냈다.
경찰관 등으로 구성된 육로 구조대도 발견지점 인근에서 헬기 잔해가 있는 곳을 파악했다.

이후 수색 관계자들은 헬기 탑승객들이 전원 사망했다는 것을 확인했다.
수색 활동에 참여한 경찰 관계자는 주 페루 한국대사관 측에 "헬기에 탑승했던 한국인 8명 등 승객 14명 전원이 사망한 것 같다"고 밝혔다.

사고 원인과 관련해 피피 스마나 쿠스코 공항안전청장은 실종 헬기가 산과 충돌 한 것으로 결론을 내렸다고 말했다고 대사관 관계자가 전했다.

대사관의 김완중 공사는 "사고 헬기는 빙산 옆에서 발견됐다. 눈이 덮인 곳에 사고 헬기가 있는 것으로 추정된다"고 밝혔다.

사고 헬기에 탔던 한국인 기업체 직원들은 6일 오후 마수코 인근 강에서 수력발전소 건설후보지를 시찰한 뒤 헬기를 타고 쿠스코로 돌아오다 연락이 두절됐다.

사고 헬기에는 삼성물산(3명)과 수자원공사(1명), 한국종합기술(2명), 서영엔지니어링(2명) 등 한국인 직원 8명을 비롯, 헬기 조종사 등 14명이 탑승했다.

실종된 헬기가 나흘 동안이나 발견되지 않으면서 비상착륙에 따른 탑승객 생존 가능성도 제기됐으나 헬기가 사고 잔해로 발견되면서 탑승자 생존 희망도 사라졌다.

당초 헬기가 실종된 곳은 악천후에다 해발 4천ｍ가 넘는 고산 밀림지대로 최근 에 내린 눈이 얼어붙어 당국은 수색작업에 큰 어려움을 겪었다.

사고가 난 헬기는 1975년에 제작된 것으로 기종은 'S-58 ET'다.

제작된 지 37년이나 된 구형인 탓에 기체결함에 따른 사고 의심도 나오고 있지만 기상사정을 감안할 때 악천후에 의한 충돌사고 가능성에 무게가 실리고 있다.
