 The Peruvian air force has detected with satellite signals the rough location of a missing local helicopter carrying 14 people, including eight South Koreans, a South Korean diplomat in Lima said Thursday.

The helicopter was located between the cities of Mazuco and Cusco in southeastern Peru at a latitude of 13 degrees and 27 minutes south and a longitude of 71 degrees and seven minutes west, Kim Wan-jung, a minister at the South Korean Embassy in Lima, told Yonhap News Agency.

   "The Peruvian air force has found the coordinates of the global positioning system (GPS) signals apparently sent from the missing helicopter," Kim said. "The signals were detected at around 11 a.m. today and the exact coordinates were confirmed at around 4 p.m."

   The helicopter was last in touch with a control center on Wednesday, around one hour after it left Mazuko for Cusco.

   South Korea's foreign ministry identified the eight South Koreans as employees of Samsung C&T, the Korea Water Resources Corp., the Korea Engineering Consultants Corp. and Seoyeong Engineering. They were returning from a trip to a potential hydropower plant site near Mazuko.

   Search efforts by helicopter were suspended earlier in the day due to bad weather conditions, Kim said, adding that the search is expected to resume Friday morning.

페루에서 한국인 8명 등 승객 14명을 태우고 비행하다 실종된 헬리콥터가 있을 것으로 추정되는 곳을 현지 공군이 GPS(인공위성위치정보) 신호를 토대로 파악한 것으로 전해졌다.

하지만 헬기를 동원한 해당 지역의 수색작업은 기상 악화로 중단됐다.

주 페루 한국대사관의 김완중 공사는 7일(현지시간) 연합뉴스에 “페루 공군이 실종 헬기에 장착됐을 것으로 보이는 GPS장치가 보내는 신호의 좌표를 찾아냈다”며 위치는 실종 헬기의 출발지인 마수코와 도착지인 쿠스코 사이라고 밝혔다.

현지 공군이 잡아낸 GPS 신호의 좌표는 남위 13도 27분, 서경 71도 07분이다.

김 공사는 “오늘 오전 11시께 신호 추적이 됐고, 오후 4시께 정확한 좌표가 확인됐다”면서 “군은 해당 GPS신호가 실종 헬기의 것으로 보고 있다”고 전했다.

그는 “수색 헬기가 이를 바탕으로 실종 헬기가 있을 것으로 예상된 지역에 출동했지만 기상악화로 산을 넘지 못한 채 돌아왔다”며 “산에 눈도 쌓여있는 상태라 (육로로 이동하는) 수색 경찰관들의 접근도 쉽지 않을 것으로 보인다. 오늘은 (더는 수색이) 어려운 상황”이라고 덧붙였다.

그러면서 “내일 실종 헬기가 있을 것으로 보이는 산악지역의 기상이 좋아진다고 해 아침에 본격적인 수색작업이 이뤄질 수 있을 것”이라고 기대했다.

실종 헬기에는 삼성물산 등 한국인 기업체 직원 8명과 외국인 직원 1명, 조종사 등 모두 14명이 탑승했으며 이 헬기는 마수코 이륙 한 시간 뒤 관제소와 교신을 마지막으로 연락이 두절됐다. (연합뉴스)
