Approximately four percent of South Korean teenage students are at risk of Internet addiction, but the number is on the decline, a government survey showed Wednesday.

   The survey of 1.74 million students in three age brackets of 11, 14 and 17 found that 68,044 of them, or 3.9 percent, risk becoming addicted to Internet use, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said in a statement.

   Of those 68,044 "at-risk" students, nearly 25 percent, or 16,714, were categorized as being at "high risk" of Internet addiction, according to the survey conducted between March and April this year.

   The total number of teens at risk of Internet addition declined, however.

   The number of students aged 11 judged to be at risk of obsessive Internet use was 19,714 this year, down 14,667 from 2010.

   The number of at-risk students aged 14 and 17 also declined by 8,866 and 11,482, respectively.

   A ministry official attributed the decline to a "growing social awareness of Internet addition."

   South Korea is one of the world's most wired nations with almost all homes linked with high-speed Internet connections. (Yonhap News)

청소년 인터넷 중독 감소 배경은?

인터넷 중독 위험에 대한 경각심이 높아지는 가운데, 청소년 인터넷 중독 위험군은 오히려 낮아지는 발표가 나와 주목을 끌고 있다. 

여성가족부가 교육과학기술부의 협조를 얻어 지난 3-4월 초등학교 4학년 48만명, 중학교 1학년 63만명, 고등학교 1학년 63만명을 대상으로 '2012년 인터넷  이용습관 진단 전수조사'를 벌인 결과, 청소년 인터넷 중독 위험군이 6만8천44명으로 2009년 이래 모든 학년별에서 대체로 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

여성부 관계자는 "인터넷 중독위험군 청소년의 감소는 제도개선, 캠페인 등을 통해 인터넷 중독에 대한 사회적 경각심이 높아진 데 따른 복합적 효과로 판단된다"

여성부는 학령 전환기 청소년을 대상으로 벌인 이번 조사에서 학년 별로는 초등 4학년은 1만9천174명, 중학교 1학년은 2만4천779명, 고등학교 1학년은 2만4천91명이 인터넷 중독 위험사용군이나 주의사용군에 해당하는 위험상태에  놓여 있다고 밝혔다. 

초등학교 4학년은 2010년 대비 인터넷 중독위험군(위험사용군+주의사용군)이  1 만4천667명, 중학교 1학년은 8천866명 감소했다. 고등학교 1학년은 2011년 대비  중 독위험군이 1만1천482명 감소한 것으로 나타났다.
