SEOUL, April 13, 2012 (AFP) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was elected "first chairman" of the powerful National Defence Commission, apparently a new title, state media said Friday.
His late father Kim Jong-Il was named "eternal" chairman of the commission, the country's top decision-making body, at an annual session of the North's rubber-stamp parliament, the official KCNA news agency said.
The announcement, which followed the North's failed rocket launch, completes the transfer of power from Kim Jong-Il to his son.
Jong-Un is now supreme commander of the 1.2 million strong military, first secretary of the communist party and chairman of the party's central military commission.
The Supreme People's Assembly (parliament) held Kim Jong-Il as the commission's permanent chairman, reflecting "the strong desire and will of the whole party and army and all the people", KCNA said.
The country is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth on April 15 of founding leader Kim Il-Sung, the late grandfather of the current ruler.

북한은 13일 최고인민회의 제12기 5차회의를 열 어 김정은 노동당 제1비서를 국방위원회 제1위원장으로 추대했다고 조선중앙통신이 보도했다.
최고인민회의는 지난해 12월17일 사망한 김정일 국방위원장을 `영원한 국방위원 장'으로 추대했다.
통신은 "최고인민회의 12기 5차회의에서는 김정은 동지를 국방위원회 제1위원장 으로 높이 추대했다"며 "김정은 동지를 공화국의 최고 수위에 높이 모신 역사적인 이 시각 최고인민회의 전체 참가자들은 김정은 동지께 최대의 영광과 가장 열렬한 축하를 드렸다"고 전했다.
`공화국의 최고 수위'라는 표현은 국방위 1위원장이 사실상 북한의 최고 지도자 임을 밝힌 것으로 해석된다.
통신은 "김정일 동지를 공화국의 영원한 국방위원회 위원장으로 높이 모실 데 대해 `사회주의헌법'에 수정보충하고 최고인민회의 법령으로 채택했음을 내외에 엄 숙히 선언했다"고 전해 헌법 개정을 통해 김 위원장을 `영원한 국방위원장'에 추대 했음을 밝혔다.
김 1비서의 고모부인 장성택 노동당 행정부장은 국방위 부위원장직을 유지한 것 으로 알려졌다.
조선중앙TV는 이날 오후 6시 김정일 국방위원장 동상 제막식을 생중계하면서 장 성택을 "조선노동당 정치국 위원이며 국방위 부위원장"이라고 소개했다.
