North Korea has begun fuelling a rocket for a launch that the West considers a missile test, a Japanese newspaper reported Thursday, citing a source "close to the government" in Pyongyang.
"The launch is coming closer. The possibility is high that the launch date will be set for April 12 or 13," the source said according to the Tokyo Shimbun in a report from Seoul.
It cited the source as saying that North Korea had begun injecting liquid fuel into the rocket.
The paper also said a diplomatic source had confirmed that North Korea has moved the rocket to a launch pad in Tongchang-ri in the country's far northwest.
The report came after North Korea insisted Tuesday it would go ahead with what it says is a satellite launch, snubbing a call from US President Barack Obama to drop the plan and accusing him of a "confrontational mindset".
The United States has suspended plans to send food aid to North Korea, saying it has broken a promise to halt missile launches and cannot be trusted to give the help to those who need it, a Pentagon official said Wednesday.
The West and North Korea's Asian neighbours have urged Pyongyang to give up on the rocket launch, which is seen as the pretext for testing ballistic missile technology. (AFP)

"北 로켓 연료주입 시작…12∼13일 발사"
일본의 도쿄신문은 북한이 위성 발사를 위해 로켓에 연료주입을 시작했으며, 다음달 12∼13일쯤 발사할 것이라고 29일 보도했다.
이 신문은 서울발 기사에서 북한 정권에 가까운 관계자의 말을 인용해 이렇게 전했다.
신문은 북한이 발사 예정인 로켓에 액체 연료 주입을 시작했으며, 소식통이 "위 성 발사가 임박해 있다. 다음달 12∼13일에 발사할 가능성이 높다"고 말했다고 보도 했다.
북한은 인공위성을 내달 12~16일 오전 7~12시 사이에 발사할 것이라고 국제기구 에 통보한 바 있다.
북한은 지난 23일 장거리 로켓인 광명성 3호 위성 발사 작업이 '본격적인 실동 단계'에 돌입했다고 발표했었다.
군사전문가에 의하면 북한은 차량으로 운반이 가능한 이동식 미사일과 고정식 미사일을 보유하고 있다.
고정식의 경우 일단 연료 주입이 시작되면 투입되는 비용 때문에 발사를 중지하 는 것이 매우 어려운 것으로 알려져있다.
한편, 북한의 조선우주공간기술위원회 우주개발국 부국장은 28일 조선중앙통신 과 회견에서 외국 전문가와 기자들에게 위성 발사 실황을 전면 공개하겠다고 밝혔다.
