Myanmar refugees’ nights campaign in Seoul

Feb. 15, 2012 - 20:39 By Korea Herald
People from Myanmar and human rights activists have held a pro-democracy demonstration in front of the country’s embassy in Seoul.

The protestors gathered in front of the Myanmar Embassy on Feb. 12 to mark Union Day, which commemorates the country’s different territories joining as one nation in 1947.

Activists called for the implementation of the Panglong Agreement signed by representatives of Myanmar’s different ethnic groups on this day, which they say has never been done by Myanmar’s successive military governments.

The All Ethnic Democracy and Human Rights Network is calling for an end to military rule, the restoration of the Panglong agreement and a genuine democratic system for the country. Members are also calling for an end to religious, political and human rights oppression, and an end to human rights violations.

“We ask that the Korean people and the international community show staunch support for the cause of democracy and the end of ethnic repression in Burma,” said John Smith Thang, executive director of the All Ethnic Democracy and Human Rights Network.
