The ruling Grand National Party adopted a new name on Thursday, as part of efforts to shake off its negative image before general elections in April.
The party’s emergency leadership council chose “Saenuri,” or “new world” in Korean, said spokesman Rep. Hwang Young-cheul.
The name was chosen from among 9,211 suggestions submitted by party members and citizens over the past week.
“The new name indicates an aspired new world, in which people may overcome conflicts and unite as one,” Hwang said.
The change will be made official once confirmed by the party’s national committee meeting next week.
The English version and other details, such as the party logo and color, are also to be confirmed by then, he added.
This is the first name change for the party since its launch in 1997 through an inter-party merger. The change came amid public calls to reform the party fundamentally.
Rep. Park Geun-hye, the party’s interim leader and presidential hopeful, acknowledged last month the necessity of changing the party name in a move to compromise with reformers who demanded that the party disband and restart as a new organization.
“Now that we have chosen a new title, our next task is to measure up to the people’s expectations and the content of that new name,” Park said.
“We must all try to gain the people’s support and trust, for a political party may not survive without them.”
The GNP also geared up the candidate selection for the April general elections by confirming its 10-member screening committee, despite the controversy over a defected member.
Civic group figure Jin Young-ah formerly claimed to have no political background but was found out, shortly after being appointed, to have applied for the party’s proportional representative post.
She also served as a spokeswoman in a pro-Lee Myung-bak union.
Park, however, confirmed that the candidate screening process will take place as planned.
“Jin stepped down for the sake of the party and the issue no longer needs to be discussed,” she told reporters Thursday.
The party also confirmed its scheduled merger with the conservative minority Future Hope Alliance, the former Pro-Park Alliance.

한나라 새 당명 `새누리당'으로 확정

한나라 14년3개월 만에 간판 내려
한나라당의 새 당명이 새로운 세상, 새로운 나라를 뜻하는 `새누리당'으로 확정됐다.
당 비상대책위원회는 2일 오전 국회에서 전체회의를 열어 당명 개정안을 의결했 다.
새누리당이라는 새 당명은 오는 9일 상임전국위, 13일 전당대회 수임기구인 전국위원회 의결 절차를 거쳐 최종 확정될 예정이다.
이에 따라 한나라당 간판은 14년3개월 만에 내려지게 됐다. 한나라당은 지난 19 97년 11월 신한국당과 민주당의 합당으로 탄생한 정당이다.
황영철 대변인은 브리핑에서 "국민공모를 통해 나온 안 중에서 새누리당으로 당 명을 개정하기로 의결했다"면서 "새로움의 `새'와 나라의 또 다른 우리말이면서 나라보다 더 큰 의미인 `누리'가 합쳐진 것으로, 새로운 세상, 새로운 나라를 뜻한다"
고 밝혔다.
그는 "새누리당은 국민의 염원을 대신하는 당명"이라면서 "새로운 대한민국, 한 단계 업그레이드된 대한민국, 갈등을 넘어 국민이 화합하고 하나 되는 새 세상의 의 미를 담고 있다"고 설명했다.
박근혜 비대위원장은 회의에서 "이름을 바꾸는 것도 중요하지만 이름을 바꾸고 나서 얼마나 잘해 나가느냐 하는 것이 무엇보다 더 중요하다"면서 "당명이라는 것은 국민의 지지와 믿음 속에서 그 힘이 나오는 것이기 때문에 우리가 앞으로 국민의 지 지와 믿음, 신뢰를 얻어 내기 위해 더욱 최선을 다해야 한다"고 당부했다.
한나라당은 지난달 27일부터 나흘간 새 당명에 대한 국민공모를 실시해 총 9천2 11건(복수응모 포함시 1만건 이상) 응모작을 접수했으며, 이 가운데 전문가 분석 및 당내 의견수렴을 통해 후보작을 새희망한국당, 한국민당, 새누리당 3개로 압축한 뒤 이날 비대위에서 새누리당을 최종 확정했다.
새누리당 제안자는 10명 정도에 달하며, 한 제안자는 이메일 제안서를 통해 "한 나라당의 새로운 쇄신의지와, 함께 꾸려나갈 희망찬 미래의 꿈을 담아 새누리당을 제안해 본다. 함께 만들어나갈 새로운 미래 세상이라는 뜻을 담고 있다"고 밝혔다고 황 대변인은 전했다.
한나라당은 새 당명이 확정됨에 따라 당을 상징하는 로고와 색깔 변경 문제도 본격 논의키로 했다.
한편 비대위는 이날 회의에서 미래희망연대(옛 친박연대)와의 합당을 공식 확정 하고 비대위를 대신해 양당 원내대표와 사무총장, 제1사무부총장, 대변인 등이 합당 회의에 참석해 최고위의 역할을 하도록 의결했다.
비대위는 또 과거 정치경력 및 `거짓말 해명' 논란 끝에 당 공직후보자추천위원 에서 중도 낙마한 진영아 `패트롤맘' 회장 자리는 공석으로 두기로 했다. 이에 따라 공천위 숫자는 11명에서 10명으로 줄었다.
