SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Yonhap) -- North Korea will soon provide about 400 more North Korean laborers to South Korean companies operating in the joint industrial complex South Korea runs in the North's border town, sources said Tuesday.
It is the first time since the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il late last month that Pyongyang will send fresh laborers to South Korean firms in the Gaesong Industrial Park.
The provision of new laborers is seen as a signal of the new North Korean leadership attempting to maintain the joint industrial complex, the symbol of inter-Korean economic cooperation, despite the North's repeated denunciations of the Lee Myung-bak administration for allowing only a former South Korean first lady and a businesswoman to visit Pyongyang to mourn Kim's death.
"North Korea will provide about 400 more laborers to the Kaesong Industrial Complex on the 26th (of January) immediately after the Lunar Yew Year's holiday," a source at the Gaesong complex said.
A Unification Ministry official also said that he "heard that North Korea will soon increase the laborers at the Kaesong Industrial Park."
The North had planned to increase the number of North Korean laborers late last month but suspended the plan due to the sudden death of Kim on Dec. 19.
Hundreds of South Korean factories in the industrial park employ 48,708 North Koreans as of the end of November last year, up 2,400 from a year earlier.

설이후, 개성공단 北근로자 400명 는다
김정일 북한 국방위원장 사망 이후 정체된 개성 공단 내 북한 근로자 숫자가 다시 늘어난다.
개성공단 관계자는 24일 "북한의 설 연휴 직후인 26일께 개성공단에 북한 근로 자가 400명 정도 추가로 투입될 예정"이라고 밝혔다.
통일부 관계자도 "북측이 조만간 개성공단 근로자를 증원할 것이라는 얘기를 들 었다"고 말했다.
지난해 12월19일 북한이 김 위원장 사망을 발표한 뒤 개성공단에 북한 근로자가 증원되기는 처음이다.
북한 중앙특구개발지도총국은 개성공단에 매달 북한 근로자를 조금씩 늘려왔는 데 작년 12월 하순 계획했던 증원 대상 인원은 김 위원장 사망의 여파로 현장 투입 이 미뤄져 온 것으로 알려졌다.
이번에 공급되는 북한 근로자들은 후발업체들을 중심으로 배치될 것이라고 개성 공단 관계자들은 전했다.
통일부에 따르면 개성공단의 북한 근로자는 지난해 11월 말 기준 4만8천708명으 로, 5만명을 눈앞에 두고 있다. 작년 1년 동안 개성공단 내 북한 근로자는 2천400여 명 늘었다.
북한이 조문기간과 설 연휴가 끝난 뒤 대규모로 북한 근로자를 신속히 늘리는 것은 개성공단을 원만히 유지하겠다는 의지를 내보인 것으로 풀이된다.
김 위원장 사망 이후 남북관계가 교착 상태를 벗어나지 못하고 있음에도 개성공 단에 관한 남북간 협의는 차질없이 진행되고 있는 셈이다.
개성공단 내 행정기관인 개성공단관리위원회는 이달 초 종합지원센터로 이사했 고, 개성공단 입주기업들이 지원한 1억원 상당의 밀가루도 27일 북한에 전달된다.
