An Amnesty International meeting is to be held in Seoul on Jan. 28.
The first Amnesty G48 meeting of 2012 will be held to assign new roles within the organization, as well as sharing information on the situation in Gangjeong, Jeju Island, where campaigners have been protesting against the building of a new naval base. Amnesty G48 is a local branch of Amnesty International set up by English speakers in Korea.
The South Korean government is constructing a $970 million base in the village, but the plan has drawn local and international protest.
The human rights group is holding the meeting to plan a field trip to the site. Members will also discuss last year’s campaigns, and set up new coordinator roles to increase the group’s activity this year.
The group will appoint coordinators according to their areas of interest, in fields such as women’s human rights, the arms trade, migrant workers and LGBT rights. Organizers are also looking for members to take on more active roles in proposing meeting topics, actions and helping with the website.
Those wishing to attend the meeting should gather at Hapjeong Subway Station, exit 8, at 3:45 p.m. before walking together to the Amnesty International Korea office on the 3rd floor of the nearby Geumag Building for the meeting, which is to last until about 6 p.m.
