Two ruling party lawmakers ― Rep. Lee Sang-deuk, the elder brother of President Lee Myung-bak, and Rep. Jungwook Hong ― said Sunday they will not run in next year’s general election.

Their annoucement came as the ruling party faces a virtual collapse in the wake of an election defeat and a series of scandals that have been bringing down its prospects for next year’s major elections. .
Lee, a six-term lawmaker, was apparently put under pressure by last week’s allegation that his secretary, surnamed Park, received some 700 million won ($610,980) from the scandal-ridden SLS Group. The group’s chairman Lee Kuk-chul was indicted Monday on bribery and other charges. The chairman said he offered kickbacks to influential politicians and government officials in a bid to remove his business from a debt workout program.
“I decided not to run for the 19th general elections. I hope this can help the party’s reform and unity,” Lee said in a news conference.
“I would like to offer my apology to the Korean people about the scandal that involved my secretary.”
Hong’s decision not to run came on different grounds.
Hong, a first-term lawmaker, had promised not to run in the April 11 election if his party members engaged in physical fights with opposition lawmakers to ram through the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, which they did, although he abstained from the vote on the pact. Hong had been calling for negotiations with the opposition.
“I will leave Yeouido with the end of my term as a member of the 18th National Assembly, blaming my inability,” Hong told reporters.
“The past four years has been a series of disappointments and frustration for me. I could neither bridge the gap between the national vision and people’s vision nor shed off people’s cynicism and distrust toward politics,” he said.
Lee and Hong’s announcements have led to speculation over whether it could lead other GNP members to follow suit. Hong is a member of the 22-member reform-minded group of lawmakers within the GNP.
The GNP is now on the verge of collapse. It was recently mired in a cyber attack scandal in which an aide to its member Choi Ku-shik attacked the website of the nation’s election watchdog National Election Commission for more than two hours during the October by-election for Seoul mayor.
The attack also targeted the official website of Park Won-soon, then a candidate for Seoul mayor, who beat GNP candidate Na Kyung-won with overwhelming support from voters in their 20-40s.
Opposition parties claim the ruling party was behind attack, which was aimed at hindering young voters from finding their polling booth.
Separately, Na told GNP floor leader Hwang Woo-yeo on Sunday that she will step down from her post as Supreme Council member, Yonhap News said.
Last week, Rep. Hong Joon-pyo resigned as leader of the GNP under strong pressure from reform-minded party members seeking to reshape the party ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Earlier, Rep. Won Hee-ryong and Rep. Kim Hyong-o also said they would not run for reelection.

이상득ㆍ홍정욱, 한나랑 총선 불출마 도화선되나
한나라당의 `총선 불출마 도미노'가 이뤄진 전망이다.
이명박 대통령의 친형인 6선의 이상득(경북 포항남ㆍ울릉) 의원이 11일 전격적 으로 총선 불출마를 선언했고, 이에 앞서 초선인 홍정욱(서울 노원병) 의원이 내년 총선에 나서지 않겠다고 밝혔다.
이상득 의원이 당내 고령ㆍ다선 의원의 상징적 인물이고, 홍정욱 의원이 소장ㆍ 쇄신 그룹에 속한다는 점에서 앞으로 나이, 선수(選數), 계파 등과 관계없는 전방위 `자기희생' 목소리가 커질 전망이다.
내년 총선까지 정확히 4개월 앞둔 현 시점에서 한나라당은 존립 위기에 처해 있 다. 재창당론 등 논의가 무성하지만, 궁극적으로 `인적 쇄신'의 성공 여부가 총선 승패를 가를 요인으로 꼽힌다.
따라서 당내에서는 일찌감치 `신진세력 영입, 고령 의원 자진 불출마' 등 공천 물갈이론이 나왔지만, 섣불리 접근할 경우 당이 쪼개질 수 있다는 우려 때문에 언급 자체를 억눌러왔다.
하지만 당의 최고령(76세)이자 큰 어른인 이상득 의원과 새내기인 홍정욱 의원 이 결단함으로써 `판도라의 상자'가 열린 셈이 됐다.
이상득 의원의 이날 선언은 친박(친박근혜)계가 두루 포진해 있는 영남권 다선 ㆍ고령 의원들에게 직격탄이 될 것으로 보인다.
SLS그룹 측으로부터 금품을 수수한 혐의로 자신의 보좌관이 구속된 점이 이 의 원의 결단을 부추긴 측면이 있지만, 이 의원이 "당의 쇄신과 화합에 작은 밑거름이 되고자 한다"고 불출마 배경을 밝혔기 때문이다.
특히 박근혜 전 대표가 당 운영의 전면에 서는 상황에서 `친박계의 자발적 용퇴 론'이 고개를 들고 있어 영남권 다선ㆍ고령 의원들을 향한 `자기희생' 압박은 높아 질 것으로 보인다.
하지만 당사자로 지목된 영남권 중진 의원들은 "친박, 고령이라는 이유만으로 희생하라는 것은 음해"라며 강력히 반발, 앞으로 전개될 `공천 물갈이' 공론화 과정 에서 파열음은 한층 커질 전망이다.
또한 이 의원이 대통령의 친형이고 친이(친이명박)계의 한 축을 이뤘다는 점에 서 특임장관을 지낸 이재오(4선) 의원을 비롯해 친이 직계 핵심 의원들도 적잖은 부 담을 느낄 것으로 보인다.
내년 총선과 대선 승리를 위해서는 이명박 정권의 실정과 단절하기 위한 인적 쇄신 요구가 나올 수 있기 때문이다.
한 재선 의원은 "이 의원의 불출마 선언은 고령의 다선 의원들에게 압력으로 작 용할 것이고, 대통령의 `불통'에 역할한 분들도 자유롭지는 못할 것"이라고 전망했 다.
이와 함께 홍정욱 의원의 첫 기득권 내려놓기 선언은 수도권 쇄신ㆍ소장파 의원 들에 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다.
홍 의원이 지난달 한미 자유무역협정(FTA) 비준안 강행처리 이후 불출마를 고려 한 만큼 `물리력에 의한 의사진행 시 불출마'를 함께 약속한 `국회 바로세우기 모임 ' 소속 의원 21명도 부담을 안게 됐다.
일부 쇄신파 의원이 쇄신 국면에서 `탈당'까지 언급했다는 점에서 연쇄 불출마 의 불씨는 살아있다. 여기에 "쇄신의 진정성을 위해 쇄신파의 자기희생이 필요하다"는 여론도 확산될 수 있다.
한 쇄신파 의원은 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "수도권에서는 불출마를 고민하는 의 원들이 많을 것"이라며 "자기 정치에 대해 근본적으로 고민하는 의원들이 많은 것으 로 알고 있다"고 말했다.
상당수 쇄신파 의원들은 당혹감을 감추지 못한 채 말을 아꼈다. 그동안 다양한 분야에서 호흡을 맞춰온 구상찬 의원은 당사와 의원회관을 찾아 홍 의원의 불출마 선언을 강하게 만류하기도 했다. (연합뉴스)
