The Korean Basketball League is excited as its former national team guard Kim Seung-hyun is poised to come back onto the court after a nearly two-year suspension.

The decision on where he will play is expected within the next fortnight after Goyang Orions agreed to release the 32-year-old from his contract.

Kim, considered the league’s most skilled point guard, was unable to play due to the suspension following his salary dispute with the Orions.

Kim was suspended in 2009 after it was revealed that he had signed an illicit dual contract under the table. The league’s governing body lifted its ban last week, allowing for his return. The Orions agreed to trade him to another club before Dec. 8. 

Three teams have shown interest in the 178cm-tall guard, according to Orions president Shim Yong-seop.

The Samsung Thunders are believed to have the strongest interest in him. The Thunders have been searching for a strong presence in the guard position after former national team guard Lee Sang-min retired in early 2010. The team’s current guard, Lee Jung-seok, has been sidelined due to a knee injury.

Reports say the Incheon Elephants and Changwon LG Sakers are also interested in acquiring Kim.

In the 2001 season, Kim won both the rookie of the year and most valuable player awards after helping the Orions win the championship. He also helped Korea win the gold medal in the 2002 Asian Games.

Now the question is whether Kim can return to his previous form after a nearly two-year absence.

Meanwhile, KBL players are welcoming the return of the former MVP.

Sakers center Seo Jang-hoon believes Kim’s dynamic dribbling and passing skills will help increase the popularity of the league.

“He is no ordinary player. So it’s good to have him. Wherever he goes to play, he will be a big hit,” he said.

“I know he is a good player. He will find his rhythm again after some practice,” said KCC Egis guard Chon Tae-poong.
