The number of countries confirmed to take part in next year’s international exposition in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, has reached the target of 100, the event’s organizers announced Thursday.

According to the Organizing Committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, the Philippines recently confirmed its participation, pushing up the number of countries taking part in the event to 100. The event will be held from May 12 to Aug. 12.

The Philippines government decided to take part in the event despite its policy of curbing spending in light of the close relationship it has with Korea, the organizing committee said.

Along with the 100 countries, eight international organizations including the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have confirmed their participation.

The organizers of the event had set the target for international organizations at five.
