The Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office reportedly arrested an escaping criminal, surnamed Kim, by utilizing Kakao Talk service, the nation-wide mobile communication network.

Kim, 39, made a getaway after he was sentenced to two months of imprisonment for drunk driving in May.

A criminal investigator at the Sungnam police office, also surnamed Kim, found the criminal’s phone number and used Kakao Talk to track down the escapee.

After changing his profile picture to a pretty female figure in her 20s, the investigator approached him through real time mobile chat.

The investigator asked him out for a meal at Namhansanseong in Suwon, successfully arresting the escapee on the spot.

“We thought a popular mobile communication service, Kakao Talk, could be utilized to track down criminals. We achieved more than expected this time, as the criminal was caught in a trap,” said the prosecution.

수원지검 성남지청은 법원에서 실형을 선고받고 도주한 김모(39)씨를 휴대전화용 메신저 ‘카카오톡’을 활용해 검거했다고 8일 밝혔다.

성남지청에 따르면 김모 수사관은 지난해 5월 음주운전에 적발된 이후 불구속상태에서 재판을 받다 징역 2월을 선고받자 도주한 김씨를 검거하기 위해 카카오톡을 수사에 활용, 최근 김씨를 검거하는 데 성공했다.

김 수사관은 도주한 김씨의 휴대전화번호를 입수해 자신의 휴대전화에 저장하고 카카오톡 프로필 사진을 미모의 20대 여성사진으로 바꾼 뒤 여성의류 모델로 가장, 접촉을 시도했다.

김 수사관은 김씨에게 성남시 남한산성에서 닭백숙을 먹자고 불러내 결국 김씨를 검거했다.

검찰의 한 관계자는 “요즘 많이 이용하는 카카오톡을 활용하면 범인을 검거할 수 있겠다는 생각에서 시도했다”며 “큰 기대는 하지 않았는데 도둑이 제 발로 걸어 들어온 셈”이라고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
