Six out of 10 Korean teens would rather “go abroad”
About six out of 10 Korean teenagers said they would go abroad in case of another war, suggesting the lack of patriotism among students.
Korea Advanced Youth Association and Teengora media conducted research on about 2,500 Korean teenagers from 400 middle and high schools, finding out that only 19.5 percents replied they would fight.
Meanwhile, in another survey conducted by Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education, about 37.6 percents of male teenagers replied “yes” to the question concerning their willingness to join the army in case of war.
The study revealed a high gap between genders, as 5.9 percents of female replied positively to the same question.
Another 32.7 percents of boys said they would assist their nation indirectly, making total of 70.3 percents to involve in the war.
On the other hand, 45.5 percents of female said they would help their country indirectly. The other half of the girls replied they “would escape and go abroad,” or “not know what to do.”

우리나라 중ㆍ고생 10명 가운데 6명 정도가 ‘전쟁이 발발하면 해외로 도피하겠다’고 응답한 설문결과가 나와 충격을 안겨주고 있다. 청소년들의 국가관이 갈수록 약화되고 있음을 보여주는 것이어서 우려된다.
한국청소년미래리더연합과 틴고라미디어는 27일 전국 400여개 학교 2500명의 중·고교생을 대상으로 한 ‘청소년 국가관·안보관’ 설문조사에서 ‘한국에서 전쟁이 발발한다면 어떻게 하겠느냐’는 질문에 응답자의 절반이 넘는 58.8%가 ‘해외로 도피한다’고 답했다고 밝혔다. ‘참전하겠다’는 응답은 19.5%에 불과했다.
하지만 이들 가운데 북한의 무력 도발이 다시 일어날 때 대처방법으로는 ‘즉각적인 군사대응’ 등 강력 대응을 주장한 응답자가 59.6%로 가장 많았으며 햇볕정책 등 유화적 대응을 꼽은 응답자는 27.7%였다. 북한의 무력 도발에는 강력히 응징해야한다고 생각하면서도 정작 전쟁이 일어나면 자신은 해외로 도피한다고 응답하는 이율배반적인 모습을 보여주고 있는 셈이다.
또 응답자의 44.5%가 일본을 주적이라고 답해 북한을 주적이라고 응답한 학생(22.1%)보다 배 가량 많았다. 이어 미국(19.9%), 중국(12.8%), 러시아(0.6%)를 주적이라고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. ‘일본 주적’ 인식 증가은 역사교과서 왜곡, 독도 영유권 주장 등으로 일본에 대한 인식이 악화된 것에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 특이한것은 중국보다 동맹국인 미국을 주적이라고 답한 학생이 더 많아 눈길을 끌었다.
천안함 폭침 사건의 원인에 대해서는 ‘북한의 무력도발’이라는 응답이 63.5%로 가장 많았다. 하지만 ‘원인이 아직 해결되지 않은 문제’라는 응답 역시 20.7%(403명)를 차지했고, ‘잘모르겠다’는 응답도 12%나 됐다.
