NEW YORK (AFP) - Hotel maids should be given panic buttons to guard against the kind of sexual assault former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn allegedly made on a woman cleaning his room, a New York lawmaker said Tuesday.
Assemblyman Rory Lancman, in the New York state legislature, told AFP that his bill proposes arming hotel staff with a portable device connected to a central security official.
The bill "requires all the hotels and motels in New York to have a panic alert system where every hotel worker who regularly enters hotel rooms is given a button, a device with a button, and you push the button and it notifies hotel management of an emergency," he said.
Lancman, a Democrat, said the device would protect the mostly female staff cleaning hotel rooms when they are at their most vulnerable.
"When you consider these women, primarily women, are in hotel rooms with strange men and they don't have security, it's a recipe for disaster."
Strauss-Kahn denies accusations that he forced a maid into a sex act in his luxury suite at a Sofitel hotel in Manhattan on May 14. He is on bail awaiting his next court hearing on June 6.

도미니크 스트로스-칸 전 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재의 사건을 계기로 호텔 여종업원들의 안전을 위해 '비상버튼(panic buttons)' 시스템을 도입해야 한다는 주장이 제기돼 눈길을 끌고 있다.
뉴욕 주의회 의원인 로리 랭크맨(민주당)은 24일(현지시각) 호텔 여종업원이 근 무 도중 성폭행과 같은 위험에 노출될 때 이를 보안담당 부서에 즉각적으로 알릴 수 있도록 휴대용 비상버튼을 배급하자는 내용의 법안을 발의했다.
이 같은 법안은 스트로스-칸 전 총재가 뉴욕 소피텔 호텔의 객실 청소원을 성폭행하려 한 혐의로 체포, 기소되면서 미국 호텔업계에 종사하는 여성 근로자들의 안전 문제가 불거진 가운데 나온 것이다.
랭크맨 의원은 법안에서 "뉴욕의 모든 호텔과 모텔은 객실을 정기적으로 출입해야 하는 근로자들에게 비상버튼을 나눠주는 보안 시스템을 갖출 것"을 요구했다.
그는 특정한 보안체계가 갖춰지지 않은 상태에서 "여성 종업원들이 낯선 남자와 함께 호텔 객실에 있는 것은 재난을 초래하는 길"이라고 지적했다.
그러나 뉴욕 호텔업계 경영자들은 '직원 안전'과 '고객의 사생활 보호' 사이에서 균형을 잡아야 한다며 신중한 입장을 취했다.
메리어트 인터내셔널의 아르네 소렌슨 최고운영책임자(COO)는 이번 사건이 자사가 운영하는 호텔의 보안체계를 점검하는 계기가 됐다고 말하면서도 "직원 안전과 손님들의 사생활 보호 두 가지 사이에는 약간의 갈등이 있다"고 토로했다.
'스트레직 호텔 앤 리조트(Strategic Hotels and Resorts Inc)'사의 로렌스 겔러 회장 역시 스트로스-칸 총재 사건과 같은 일이 발생할 때마다 호텔 직원들의 안전 문제에 "경종이 울린다"고 인정했다.
그러나 겔러 회장은 최근 들어 전자키 사용과 복도 내 CCTV 설치 등이 일반화되면서 호텔의 보안 수준이 높아졌음을 강조하고, 직원의 안전만큼이나 투숙객들의 사생활 문제도 중요하다고 밝혔다.
