The U.S. magazine Foreign Policy has chronicled French political leaders’ sex scandals after Dominique Strauss-Kahn‘s arrest. Following are excerpts from the report.

Felix Faure
Felix Faure who was president of France from 1895 to 1899 died mysteriously on Feb. 16, 1899. He was alone in a drawing room in the Elysee Palace with his mistress, Marguerite Steinheil, when he suffered a fatal cerebral hemorrhage.
Steinheil, who described herself as the president’s “psychological advisor” was a frequent visitor to the palace.
According to one historian‘s account, the two were found half-naked with Faure’s hand clenched in Steinheil‘s hair.
Francois Mitterand
In 1994 it was revealed President Francois Mitterand had, since 1981, kept a second family hidden from public view.
For most of his presidency, he had spent most of his nights at the apartment of Anne Pingeot, an art historian. It was revealed that a Gendarmerie colonel had been employed almost entirely to shield Pingeot and her daughter, Mazarine, from press scrutiny.
Mazarine remembers Mitterrand as a kind and attentive father. Pingeot and Mazarine publicly attended Mitterrand’s funeral in 1996.
Jacques Chirac
In her memoirs, Jacques Chirac’s wife Bernadette wrote of the difficulties of living with a “handsome” man who has “enormous success” with women,
He didn‘t confirm or deny the widespread reports that he had maintained a long-term affair with a journalist while he was prime minister in the 1970s, but said that in any case, “it is not something that had a big effect on me.”
Nicolas Sarkozy
Nicolas “President Bling-Bling” Sarkozy divorced his wife of 11 years, Cécilia, shortly after taking office in 2007 -- both had allegedly had affairs during their on-again-off-again relationship.
He began dating actress/model Carla Bruni within months and their very public relationship led to an erosion of Sarkozy’s support among older French voters.
The relationship became even more of a distraction when he threatened to sue a tabloid that alleged he had sent text messages to Cecilia offering to take her back, just a week before his marriage to Bruni.
France‘s first couple have themselves been dogged by rumors of infidelity. Sarkozy reportedly revoked the security privileges of his high-profile former justice minister, Rachida Dati, over reports that she had spread rumors that Bruni was having an affair with another pop singer.
Frederic Mitterrand
In a 2005 memoir, television presenter and writer Frederic Mitterrand, nephew of the former president, wrote candidly of his experiences paying for sex with “boys” in Thailand. The admission didn’t prevent Mitterrand from being named France‘s minister of culture four years later.
Despite criticism from the opposition, Sarkozy backed his culture minister; Mitterrand still has the job today.

프랑스 지도자들의 성추문
도미니크 스트로스-칸 국제통화기금(IMF) 총재가 프랑스의 유력 대선 후보에서 졸지에 성범죄 혐의자로 전락해 연일 세 계 언론의 주목을 받고 있다.
프랑스에서는 정치인의 섹스 스캔들이 머리기사를 장식하는 일은 이번이 처음이 아니다. 미국의 국제문제 전문지 포린폴리시(FP)는 16일 `불륜의 나라'라는 제목의 기사에서 역대 프랑스 지도자의 성추문들을 소개했다.
우선 1899년 2월 16일 갑자기 숨진 펠릭스 포레 전 대통령의 사인을 둘러싼 성 추문이 꼽혔다. 포레 전 대통령은 당시 정부(情婦)와 사랑을 나누다 숨진 것으로 알 려졌으며 진상은 그 후에도 밝혀지지 않았다.
또 프랑수아 미테랑 전 대통령이 1994년 숨겨놓은 `제2 가족'이 있다는 사실이 드러났을 때 프랑스 국민은 충격에 휩싸였다. 미테랑은 대통령 재임 시 거의 모든 밤을 정부였던 안 팽조의 아파트에서 보냈고, 둘 사이에 난 숨겨진 딸 마자린은 엄 마와 함께 1996년 미테랑의 장례식에 공개적으로 참석했다.
자크 시라크 전 대통령도 예외는 아니다. 시라크의 부인 베르나데트는 수많은 여성편력이 있는 `잘생긴' 남자와 같이 산다는 것이 어려웠다는 기록을 남겼다. 시 라크는 지난 2007년 한 인터뷰에서 그가 1970년대 총리 시절 언론인과 오랫동안 불 륜관계를 유지했다는 언론 보도에 대해 확인도 부인도 하지 않았다.
니콜라 사르코지 현 대통령도 2007년 취임 직후 11년간 살아온 부인 세실리아와 이혼하고 오랫동안 관계를 맺어온 모델 카를라 브루니와 재혼했다.
또 미테랑 전 대통령의 조카인 작가 프레데릭 미테랑은 지난 2005년 자서전 `불 량인생'을 통해 태국에서 소년들과의 동성애를 나문 경험을 솔직하게 밝혔다. 이런 솔직한 고백에도 그는 4년 후 프랑스 문화장관에 임명됐다.
