Police continue search for suspect in armored van robbery

Jan. 2, 2011 - 15:47 By 양승진

Police continued their search on Sunday for a man suspected of stealing 530 million won (US$472,760) in cash from a armored van in this southeastern city on New Year's Eve.

The suspect, thought to be in his 20s or 30s, is still at large after robbing the cash-carrying van that was parked on a college campus on Friday afternoon in Gumi, 261 kilometers south of Seoul.

At the time of the theft, the three security guards assigned to the van were having lunch, according to police officers.

Although the unidentified suspect removed a chip from a surveillance camera to avoid being filmed, police officials said they restored the camera's hard disk and released the video to print and broadcast media.

The stolen cash, which belongs to the company that hired the security guards, was meant to replenish automatic teller machines in stores and colleges around the city.

Authorities said they are looking into the details of the theft and questioning security guards in their search for the suspect.
