A Russian general consul to Japan died after falling off a cliff during a volleyball game, reported Russian media Saturday citing the Russian embassy in Tokyo.

Vladimir Pushkov was attending a party with colleagues in the state of Agano when he tried to return a ball that had overshot the court. But he lost control and fell off a cliff.

Pushkov's deputy was then seriously injured in an attempt to rescue Pushkov, and needed to be airlifted from the site in a helicopter.

The two worked for the consulate in Niigata, which lies about 300kilometres north of Tokyo. (DPA)

외교관, 휴일 맞아 배구경기 중 숨져

일본 니가타(新潟) 주재 러시아 총영사가 26일(현지시간) 현지 공원에서 배구 경기를 하다가 숨졌다고 이타르타스 통신이 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 블라디미르 푸슈코프(55) 니가타 주재 러시아 총영사는 이날 휴일을 맞아 니가타현 아가노시(市)의 공원에서 공관 직원들과 배구 경기 중 경기장 밖으로 날아간 공을 잡으러 뛰어가다 경사진 언덕에서 굴러 넘어진 뒤 곧바로 숨졌다. 

푸슈코프는 넘어지면서 머리를 땅에 부딪혀 뇌진탕으로 숨진 것으로 보인다고 통신은 덧붙였다.

도쿄 주재 러시아 대사관 관계자도 푸슈코프 총영사의 사망 사실을 확인하면서 "그가 공을 잡으러 달려가다 젖은 잔디에 미끄러지면서 경사진 언덕으로 굴러 넘어져 머리를 땅에 부딪혔다"고 설명했다.

푸슈코프 총영사를 도우려던 부영사 로만 콜레스닉도 허리를 다쳐 헬기로 니가타 병원으로 후송됐다고 통신은 덧붙였다.
