A U.S. man accused of robbing a 81-year-old woman was in fact merely sleepwalking, his lawyer claimed.

Nicholas D’Amato, representing 27-year-old Winston A. Riley, said his client was suffering from a medical condition when he pulled out a knife on an elderly woman in March and demanded her purse, according to local news reports. Riley says he was “awakened” after the woman fled from the elevator.

The police dismissed the claims, saying Riley already confessed to the crimes after he was arrested, although a police report says that Riley could not remember why he tried to rob the woman.

D’Amato stressed that Riley is a "family man" with no criminal record.

“‘Here’s a guy (with) no criminal record, married…Do you honestly think he woke up one morning, drove across the state and decided to rob a woman in a place full of security cameras?” D’Amato pointed out.

“결혼하고 범죄기록도 없는 남자가 여기 있습니다…이런 사람이 정말 하루 아침에 주(州) 반대편까지 차를 몰고가 감시카메라가 득실대는 곳에서 범행을 저지를 것이라 보십니까?”라고 다마토는 말했다.
