Two pilots aboard an Air Berlin flight issued a distress signal ahead of landing out of extreme fatigue last month, according to reports. The signal is usually a sign for an emergency that might involve a possible casualty or hijacking, but normally is only sent when a pilot cannot guarantee a safe landing.

The airplane in question, which was approaching Munich Airport in Germany, issued to airport officials what is called a “pan pan call,” or a distress signal used in a state of urgency.

The Air Berlin Airbus A330-200 had departed from Majorca, Spain and as it neared the German airport, the pilot sent the distress signal and landed the airplane on autopilot, sending an alarm to airport officials.

The cockpit crew asked for priority landing rights because they were exhausted, according to reports. It is the first time such an incident has occurred.

German Air Traffic Control said that the airplane landed without any problem and Air Berlin has not yet provided any comment.

일반적으로 긴급 무선 교신은 조종사가 안전한 비행이 불가능하다고 판단할 때 사용하는 것으로 이전에는 이런 일이 일어난 적이 없다.

이 비행기의 운항승무원은 자기들이 너무 피곤하기 때문에 우선적으로 공항에 착륙시켜 줄 것을 공항측에 요청했다고 한다.

독일 항공 안전국은 이 비행기가 안전하게 착륙했다고 전했고 에어 베를린은 이번 일에 대해 아직 어떤 입장도 내놓지 않고 있다.
