Alabama pastor who criticized a film about sexuality said last Tuesday that his sermon about "burning the city block" was misunderstood, according to local news reports.

After leading a protest against the screening of Norwegian movie “Turn Me On Dammit!” in Bama Theater last month, Pastor Randy Fuller urged his congregation to pray that God ‘burn the city block’ if the theater does not exclude the movie from its lineup.

“So you can get together in groups of two or three or four and say, ‘God, if they won’t turn that thing around, burn the city block down. Burn it to the ground,’” he said in the sermon.

These words and protests forced the local theater to postpone the release of film.

However, Fuller said that he did not call upon people to actually burn down the Bama Theater, and his sermon was a part of the whole context of ‘turning our country around.

“I wasn’t up there about burning down a movie theater because of a movie; I’ve got bigger fish to fry,” Fuller said.

앨라배마주 언론에 따르면 터스칼루사 시의 랜디 풀러 목사는 지난 주 설교에서 자신의 교회 옆에서 음란물을 파는 서점에 대고 “주님, 그 가게를 불태워 없애주소서”라고 기도했다.

그러면서 문제의 노르웨이 영화를 17일 개봉키로 한 극장을 겨냥해 “그 사람들이 이것을 돌려놓지 않으면 그곳에 불벼락을 내려 없애주소서”라는 기도를 올리자고 신도들에게 권유했다.

지난달 이 영화를 상영키로 했다가 교회의 반대로 이를 보류했던 극장 측은 인터넷 예배로 이 사실을 접하고 목사들의 시위 등 만일의 사태에 대비해 경비원을 고용하는 등 대책 마련에 나섰다.

이에 대해 풀러 목사는 자신이 말한 ‘이것’은 나라라는 뜻이라며 설교의 맥락을 곡해하지 말라고 반격했다.

그는 “극장을 불살라달라고 한 것까지는 아니었다. 내겐 불에 튀겨야 할 더 큰 생선들이 많다”고 덧붙였다.
