A young woman was prepared to take the fall for a drunken car crash until her ex-boyfriend reneged on a promise to pay her expenses, the New York Post reports.
Sophia Anderson, 21, who lives in New York City's Brooklyn borough, no longer faces a charge of driving while intoxicated, the Post reports. She can expect to be charged with obstruction of justice, sources told the newspaper Tuesday.
Anderson and Dan Sajewski, 23, of Riverhead, N.Y., were in his father's Mercedes convertible when the car struck a house in Huntington, N.Y., in May. Anderson's lawyer said both were drunk and Sajewski, who had previous arrests for drinking in the subway and possession of marijuana, convinced his then-girlfriend to tell police she had been driving.
Sajewski backed out on a promise to pay Anderson's legal expenses and take her on a vacation, the Post's sources said.
"She was very intoxicated but she remembers him coming up to her after the crash and giving her a hug and saying he loved her and she had to do this for him," her lawyer, John LoTurco, said. "It's the ultimate betrayal of trust."
LoTurco told the Post police have confirming evidence Sajewski was driving, including his DNA on the airbag on the driver's side of the car.
He said Anderson is cooperating with prosecutors, has broken off her relationship with Sajewski and is in rehab. (UPI)

앤더슨의 변호인은 두 사람 모두 음주상태였으며, 사제이스키는 지하철에서 음주를 하고 마리화나를 소지한 혐의로 구속된 전력이 있다고 말했다.
사고 당시 운전대를 잡았던 사제이스키는 여자친구인 앤더슨에게 운전자가 자신이 아닌 앤더슨이었던 것으로 거짓 진술하도록 종용했다.
사제이스키는 여자친구가 혐의를 받아주는 대신 소송비용을 모두 지불할 것이며, 휴가를 보내주겠다고 약속했다.
앤더슨의 변호인 존 로털코는 “앤더슨은 당시 많이 취해있는 상태였지만 사건 직 후 남자친구가 다가와 포옹을 한 뒤 사랑한다고 말한 것을 기억했다. 그녀는 그를 위해 이 일을 하게 됐다”며 “이는 믿음에 대한 철저한 배신이다”라고 말했다.
로털코는 경찰이 운전자석에 있는 에어백에서 발견한 DNA가 사제이스키의 것과 일치하며 여러 정황들을 살펴봤을 때 사제이스키가 진범이라는 사실을 확인했다고 말했다.
한편, 앤더슨은 음주운전혐의는 벗게 됐지만 사법 방해죄를 입게 됐다고 현지 언론이 화요일(현지시각) 전했다.
변호인은 앤더슨이 검찰에 협조하고 있으며, 현재 사제이스키와는 결별한 상태로 재활원에 입원 중이라고 밝혔다.
