Parliamentary speaker to visit Japan

Oct. 21, 2014 - 16:54 By KH디지털2

South Korea's parliamentary speaker will visit Japan next week for talks with top Japanese politicians, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on ways to deepen the two countries' ties, his office said Tuesday.

Chung Ui-hwa's three-day visit from Sunday comes at the invitation of Bunmei Ibuki, the speaker of Japan's lower house of parliament, according to the office.

During Chung's visit, the two sides plan to discuss ways to resolve various historical issues stemming from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula as well as ways to advance their countries' bilateral ties, the office said.

Chung is scheduled to hold a series of meeting with Ibuki, Masaaki Yamazaki, the president of the upper house of parliament, and Abe on Monday.

Relations between South Korea and Japan have been strained in recent years as Seoul has demanded Tokyo take sincere steps to address its grievances over colonial-era atrocities, including the sexual enslavement of Korean women for Japanese soldiers during World War II. (Yonhap)
