Italian officials said they were investigating the death of a 13-year-old British teen in a fall from a ski lift.

Poonam Bhattal was on a class trip to Claviere, Italy, about 50 miles west of Turin on the French border. She was on the chairlift but standing up before she fell, the lift operator said.

The metal safety bar was down and Bhattal could be seen grabbing onto it before she let go and plummeted to her death, the BBC reported Saturday.

Officials said they don't know why Bhattal stood up on the lift.

"Before she fell down she was grabbing for the safety bar and the men [operating] the lift saw this, stopped the lift ... but it was too late," said Marco Steffanini, a spokesman for Skibound, the group that organized the trip. (UPI)

“그녀가 떨어지기 전에 안전봉을 잡았고 리프트 운전 기사가 그 모습을 보고 리프트를 정지시켰지만 너무 늦었다”고 스키 여행을 계획한 스키바운드의 대변인 마르코 스테파니니가 말했다.
