More than three decades after receiving the famous Wow! signal, humanity is finally sending its answer to what may be an alien civilization, according to news reports.

The National Geographic channel recently revealed a plan to collect messages from the general public via Twitter and beam it to outer space. All tweets tagged with the hashtag #ChasingUFOs from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. on June 30 GMT will be combined into a single encrypt message.

The message will be sent out on August 15, exactly 35 years after the Wow! signal was received.

The television channel will work with Arecibo Observatory to encrypt the message, which will focus on a “complex but noticeable pattern, hopefully standing out from other random, natural noise,” said its spokeswoman Kristin Montalbano. She said the message is likely to be in binary phase code, which uses 0s and 1s.

The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected by Jerry R. Ehman on August 15, 1977, while he was working on a Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence project at the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University. The astounded astronomer scrawled “Wow!” next to the data on a computer printout, giving the 72-second signal its name.

The Wow! signal garnered huge media attention, but it has not been detected again to this day. Its source still remains a mystery.

메시지를 암호화하는 내셔널 지오그래픽 채널과 아레시보 천문대이 공동으로 진행하게 된다. 이 메시지는 2진법 형식이 될 가능성이 크다고 한다.

와우 신호는 1977년 8월 5일에 오하이오 주립대학에서 SETI 프로젝트에 참여하던 천문학자 제리 R. 에먼에 의해 발견된 72초짜리 협대역 무전 신호로서, 외계문명으로부터 왔을 가능성이 있다고 많은 이들이 추정하고 있다.

당시 신호를 수신한 에먼은 놀라움에 출력 자료 옆에 ‘와우’라고 적었고, 이는 그대로 신호의 이름이 되었다.

당시 와우신호는 전세계 언론의 주목을 받았으나, 이와 같은 신호는 그 이후로 발견되지 않았고, 그 근원이 어디였는지는 아직까지도 풀리지 않는 수수께기로 남아있다. (코리아헤럴드)
