Sounds associated with auroras, or northern lights, described in folktales and by wilderness wanderers, have been confirmed by Finnish researchers.

Scientists at Aalto University using microphones determined the crackles or muffled bangs are formed about 70 meters above ground level.

"Our research proved that, during the occurrence of the northern lights, people can hear natural auroral sounds related to what they see," Aalto researcher Unto K. Laine said.

Laine said researchers suspect there may be several mechanisms behind the formation of auroral sounds, but they are "likely caused by the same energetic particles from the sun that create the northern lights far away in the sky."

"These particles or the geomagnetic disturbance produced by them seem to create sound much closer to the ground," he said in a university release Monday.

Much about the auroral sounds is still a mystery, researchers said, as they do not occur regularly when the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, are seen.

They are so soft it is difficult to hear them and to distinguish them from ambient noise, the release said. (UPI)

설화를 통해 전해 내려오는 오로라의 ‘소리’가 실존하는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

핀란드 알토 대학의 연구진은 최근 오로라 현상이 일어나는 위치에서 이와 관련된 소리가 나는 것을 확인했다고 UPI통신이 9일(현지시간) 보도했다. 연구진이 설치한 음향장치가 지상 70미터 정도 지점에서 ‘탁탁’거리는 소리나 미세한 폭발음이 나는 것을 포착한 것이다.

연구에 참여한 운토 레인은 “북극광 (aurora borealis)와 관련된 소리는, 먼 하늘에서 (오로라) 현상을 일으키는 에너지 입자의 의해 동일하게 만들어지는 것으로 드러났습니다”라고 말했다.

그는 에너지 입자들와 입자들로 인한 지자기적 장애로 인해 소리는 실제 오로라 현상이 일어나는 장소보다 훨씬 더 지상에 가까운 곳에서 나게 되는 것이라고 설명했다.

그러나 이러한 ‘오로라 소리’가 오로라 현상이 일어날 때마다 들리는 것은 아닌데다 아직 풀어야 할 수수께끼는 많이 남아 있다고 한다.

북쪽의 빛 (northern light)이라고도 불리는 오로라는 태양에서 방출된 대전입자의 일부가 지구 자기장에 이끌려 대기로 진입하면서 공기분자와 반응하여 빛을 내는 현상으로 북반구와 남반구의 고위도 지방에서 흔히 볼 수 있다.
