Images of a bizarre pig-like carcass that washed up in New York triggered a series of conspiracy theories, according to news reports.

The photos by an amateur photographer Denise Ginley shows a grotesque two-feet-long creature with a snarling snout, sharp teeth and five toes on each foot.

“We (Ginley and her boyfriend) were horrified by it and we took some camera phone pictures and then finally we decided to come back with my camera and I got up the courage to climb over the fence and get closer to it,” she said told online website Animal New York. She said she found the creature under the Brooklyn Bridge while taking a walk.

When the images were unveiled on the Internet, some users said it may be a sloth, a dead dog, or even a toy, while others suggested it was a product of some secret government experiment.

“There is an island off the coast of NY where they used to do animal experiments. Supposedly they closed the lab recently and are trying to sell the land for real estate,” one user said.

Another user claimed this was a proof of “human animal genetic engineering,” indicating that the ‘toe’ of the creature was far too human-like to dismiss as a simple deformity.

However, the New York Parks Department scoffed at the conspiracy theories and explained that Ginley’s find was merely ‘a pig left over from a cookout’, and said they disposed of it.

But Ginley insisted that the creature was most certainly not a pig, pointing out it had five distinguishable toes instead of the cloven hoof of a pig. She guessed it was either ‘some sort of raccoon or giant rodent’.

This was not the first time an unknown creature has washed up shore in the Big Apple. Four years ago, a creature dubbed the “Montauk Monster” was spotted on a beach near the business district of Montauk, New York.

The hideous creature had combined characteristics of a raccoon, sea turtle, rodent, dog and a sheep. People fascinated by the peculiar animal debated fiercely about what it may be, until zoologists concluded it was merely a deformed raccoon.

외신 보도에 따르면 지난 22일 (현지시간) 아마추어 사진가 데니스 긴리 씨는 남자친구와 함께 산책을 하다 브루클린 다리 밑에서 돼지를 닮은 동물을 발견했다고 한다.

긴리 씨가 공개한 사진에 찍힌 이 생명체는 몸길이가 61cm 정도로 날카로운 치아를 갖고 있었으며 사람의 손과 흡사한 발에는 발가락이 각각 다섯 개씩 있었다.

사진들이 인터넷에 공개되자 네티즌들은 이 생명체의 정체에 대해 나무늘보, 개, 혹은 그냥 장난감이라는 등 갑론을박을 이어갔다. 몇몇 네티즌들은 심지어 동물이 정부의 비밀 실험의 결과물이라는 추측까지 내놓았다.

한 네티즌은 “뉴욕 해안가 너머에는 동물 실험을 위해 그들이 (정부)가 이용해온 섬이 있다. 그들이 최근에 연구소를 폐쇄하고 섬을 팔려고 한 것으로 보인다”라고 주장했다.

또 다른 네티즌은 이 동물의 발이 단순한 기형이라고 보기엔 사람의 손과 너무 비슷하다며 ‘인간-동물 생명 공학의 증거’라고 주장했다.

그러나 뉴욕 시 공원 관리소는 사체가 야외식사를 하고 남은 돼지일 뿐이라며 음모론을 일축했다. 관리소는 또한 사체를 이미 처리했다고 밝혔다.

그러나 긴리는 이 동물의 발에는 돼지의 발굽 대신에 발가락이 있다며, ‘절대 돼지가 아니다’라고 주장했다. 그녀는 그것이 거대한 설치류이거나 너구리일 것이라고 추정했다.

정체 모를 동물의 사체가 뉴욕 해안가에 쓸려온 것은 이번이 처음은 아니다. 4년 전에는 뉴욕 몬턱 지역에서 괴상한 생명체가 발견된 바 있다.

‘몬턱 괴물’이라고 불린 이 동물은 너구리, 바다거북, 설치류, 개, 그리고 양의 특성을 골고루 갖추고 있었다. 당시 많은 사람들이 ‘몬턱 괴물’의 정체에 대해 열띤 토론을 펼쳤으나 동물학자들은 단순히 기형 너구리일 뿐이라고 설명했다.
