Microsoft says Windows 8 will go on sale Oct. 26. The upgrade to its operating system is designed to work better with touch screens and on tablet computers.

Microsoft announced the date in a blog post and at its annual sales meeting Wednesday. The software company had said earlier that Windows 8 would go on sale in October.

Microsoft is releasing the software as a downloadable upgrade that day for PC owners, and letting PC makers start selling computers with Windows 8 the same day.

As an upgrade for users of Windows XP, Vista or 7, Windows will cost $40. That's much less than Microsoft Corp. has charged for previous operating system upgrades. People who bought a Windows 7 computer on June 2 or later can upgrade for $15. (AP)

마이크로소프트 (MS) 사의 최신 운영체제 윈도8가 오는 10월 26일 출시된다고 현지 언론이 18일 (현지시간) 보도했다.

AP통신 등 외신에 따르면 스티븐 시놉스키 MS 오피스 부문 선임 부사장은 연간 판매회의에서 윈도8의 소비자용 버전을 10월26일 시판하기로 확정지었다고 언급했다. 또한 관련 하드웨어들도 함께 출시할 예정이다.

윈도 7, XP, 비스타 등 기존의 윈도 운영체제를 이용하는 유저들은 40달러(한화 약 4만 6찬원)을 내고 온라인 상에서 업그레이드 할 수 있다. 그러나 패키지형 DVD 버전을 구입하기 위해서는 69.99달러(약 8만원)를 내야 한다.

MS사는 최신형 OS로 업그레이드 할 시 터치 스크린과 태블릿 PC에서 더 수월한 작업이 가능할 것이라고 밝혔다.

윈도8은 메트로UI로 사용자 환경을 뜯어고치고, 터치스크린 기능을 탑재했으며, 스카이드 라이브란 클라우드 서비스를 통해 기기간 콘텐츠 공유를 지원한다. 부팅 및 프로그램 실행 속도도 전보다 빨라졌다고 한다.
