Apple's new mac OS X 'Mountain Lion' has been released on Wednesday.

When Apple releases its quarterly earnings report at the end of the business day Tuesday, Mac users can also anticipate the official release of the upgraded operating system, dubbed Mountain Lion.

“We’re thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We’ve also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release Mountain Lion on Wednesday and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we’ve got in the pipeline.”

Apple previewed Mountain Lion -- or OS X version 10.8 -- at its World Wide Developers Conference in June, but declined to give it an official release date.
Still, if history is precedent (and with Apple‘s software and hardware release track record, it usually is), fans of the Cupertino-based tech giant can be reasonably certain that Mountain Lion will be made available Wednesday. According to 9to5mac, Apple store employees have been told to plan for overnight overtime Tuesday night, further ramping up excitement.

Last year’s OS X version 10.7, known as Lion, was also released the day following the July earnings report.

So what can Macbook, iMac, and Mac Mini users expect for their $19.99?

Primarily, its overall interface will start to look a lot more like iOS, the mobile software running on Apple‘s iPhones, iPads and iPods. More storage and computing will take place in the cloud, allowing for syncing between multiple devices -- in other words, you’ll be able to leave what you‘re doing on your laptop at home, and pick up your activity on the road with your iPhone.

Top new or updated features in Mountain Lion include:

iCloud integration

- Emails, contacts, reminders and notes will be synced seamlessly from Mac to any iOS mobile device.
- Personal settings will sync too.
- Documents will update across all devices.

Sharing integration
- Twitter and Facebook integration will be built into apps (including Safari, iPhoto and documents)
- Facebook’s in-app support will launch in the fall

Messages
- Will replace iChat
- Send rich media messages between any Mac devices with Messages or iMessage installed
- Continue conversations from any of your devices

Notification center
- Small bubble will slide in with notifications for emails, messages, calendar events, reminders, software updates, Twitter and third-party apps
- Notifications pop up in the corner and then disappear, like they do on iOS
- Swipe to open the notification center on the side of the display
- Update Facebook from notification center

Safari
- Single smart field for search and addresses
- Pinch to view multiple tabs, swipe to switch between
- iCloud syncs Safari tabs across devices

Dictation
- In any text field
- Learns voice characteristics and accent, so it improves the more it‘s used

Airplay mirroring
- Stream whatever is on your Mac to Apple TV, wirelessly(UPI)

애플 '마운틴라이언' 공식 다운, 위력은?

지난 화요일 애플이 새로운 맥 OS인 '마운틴라이언' 공식 출시일을 발표한 데 이어 수요일 정식 다운로드가 개시됐다.

지난 화요일 애플의 최고경영자(CEO) 팀 쿡은 분기별 영업 실적 발표와 동시에 마운틴라이언 공식 발매를 선언했다. 

마운틴라이언의 가격은 19,99 달러로 책정되었으며, 공식 사이트인 애플 앱스토어에서 다운로드가 가능하다.

마운틴라이언의 전체적인 인터페이스는 아이폰, 아이패드, 아이팟 등 모바일용 소프트웨어인 iOS와 비슷하게 변했다. 클라우드에 더 많은 저장 공간이 확보되어 컴퓨터 작업이 원활해지며, 여러 대의 기기에서 동시 작업을 할 수 있다.

이전 버전에 비해 약 200가지 새로운 기능이 추가된 ‘마운틴라이언’의 핵심은 바로 이 클라우드 서비스다. OSX 10.8 버전인 마운틴라이언은 애플 디바이스의 아이클라우드를 통합했다. 애플은 지난 11일 미국 샌프란시스코 모스코니 센터에서 열린 세계개발자회의에서 마운틴라이언의 아이클라우드 기능으로 모바일 업무 환경의 혁신을 예고한 바 있다.

아이클라우드 통합에 따라 아이클라우드가 지원되는 아이폰, 아이패드에 메일, 연락처, 캘린더, 메시지, 미리알림, 노트 등을 동기화할 수 있다. 특히 라이언마운틴의 새로운 기능인 문서 클라우드 기능은 페이지, 키노트, 프리뷰, 문서편집기까지 동기화 가능하다.

기본 웹브라우저인 사파리가 아이클라우드에 맞게 개선됐으며 터치스크린을 사용할 수 있도록 기능이 보강됐다. 특히 맥에서 검색한 정보를 아이폰이나 아이패드와 실시간으로 공유할 수 있다.

‘파워냅’은 새롭게 등장한 애플리케이션으로, 컴퓨터가 취침 모드일 때에도 설치된 앱의 업데이트 및 동기화를 제공한다. 에어플레이 미러링 기능은 여러 대의 맥이나 아이폰 및 아이패드와 무선 연결을 가능케 한다.

‘딕테이션(받아쓰기)’ 기능도 새롭게 추가됐다. 키보드 대신 마이크로 전달된 음성 언어를 입력하는 기능이다. 그러나 한국어를 포함한 다국어 지원 여부에 대해서는 알려지지 않았다.

OS X 마운틴 라이언이 설치 가능한 매킨토시 제품은 아래와 같다.

단, 6월 11일 이후 신형 맥북을 구매한 경우 기존 OS인 라이언이 설치되어 있으므로, 해당 구매자에 한해 출시일로부터 30일 내 마운틴라이언을 무료 다운로드 가능하다. 

한편 모바일용 OS의 업그레이드 버전 iOS 6는 올 가을 출시 예정이다.
