The hoverbike made famous by the “Return of the Jedi” has been recreated and tested by California firm Aerofex, according to news sources.

The vehicle is made from two ducted fans facing the ground. Pilots can move it by controlling the angle of these fans with two control sticks and can control the direction of flight by simply leaning in the desired direction.

Initial plans to recreate the hoverbike were called off because of the complex control system. However, Aerofex was able to create a system based on humans’ natural sense of balance and leaning movements.

“Since [the pilot’s] balancing movements are instinctive and constant, it plays out quite effortlessly to him,” the firm claims.

Aerofex believes the hoverbikes have many potential uses as they can travel over any terrain.

“Imagine personal flight as intuitive as riding a bike,” the firm’s website states. “Or transporting a small fleet of first-responder craft in the belly of a passenger transport. Think of the advantages of patrolling borders without first constructing roads.”

The company has no current plans to sell the hoverbikes. Instead, they are planning on using the technology to create a series of drones, which they hope to have testing by the end of 2013.

처음에 호버바이크를 제작하려던 계획은 복잡한 통제 시스템 때문에 좌절됐다. 그러나 에어로펙스 사(社)는 자연스러운 균형감과 조종사의 기울기에 따라 반응하는 새로운 조종 시스템을 만들어냈다.

에어로펙스의 창업자이자 엔지니어인 마크 데 로체는 이노베이션뉴스데일리와의 인터뷰에서 "자전거처럼 자유롭게 조종할 수 있는 개인 비행장비가 있다고 상상을 해 보라"며 "국경 경비대에 빠르게 도입될 수 있을 것이다"라며 응용 가능성을 내비쳤다.

그는 "비행 장비의 문턱을 낮추고 ATV(전지형全地形 만능차)를 압도할 수 있을 것이다"라며 포부를 드러냈다.
