A U.S. computer company officer says predictions of the demise of the old-style home PC due to rapid development of smartphones and tablets are overblown.

David Schmoock, who heads North American operations for Chinese PC maker Lenovo, says he‘s seen little evidence tablet adoption is undercutting laptop sales.

“The tablet world is almost completely complementary to the PC world,” Schmoock told Network World. “It really is a dual-device world.”

He acknowledges some major readjustments in the home PC world, including computer refresh cycles that have grown longer because of an ongoing recession.

“There was a period of time in which people paused, just because of the economic recession: ’Maybe instead of 36 months, we‘ll go 48 months,’” Schmoock said.

However, those same business customers are beginning to complement their traditional PCs with tablet purchases, he said.

The various form factors in the mobile world -- screen size, input methods and such -- will likely consolidate more heavily while the PC market is mature and relatively stable, he said.

“I do think there will be more convergence between tablets and phones than I have seen between tablets and PCs,” he said. (UPI)

한 미국 컴퓨터업계 전문가가 스마트폰과 태플릿PC의 ‘광풍’으로 인해 전통적 스타일의 가정용 PC가 사라지게 될 것이라는 예상은 과대망상에 지나지 않는다는 주장을 펴 화제다.

중국 컴퓨터제조업체 레노보(Lenovo)의 북미지역사장 데이비드 슈머크(David Schmoock)는 태플릿PC의 등장과 인기가 랩탑컴퓨터 판매를 약화시키고 있다는 증거를 찾아보기는 힘들다고 말했다.

네트워크 월드(Network World)와의 인터뷰에서 슈머크 사장은 태블릿PC 시장과 PC시장의 관계를 ‘상호공생적(complementary)’이라고 하면서 바야흐로 컴퓨터 두 대를 동시에 사용하는 ‘듀얼디바이스(dual-device)’ 시대가 도래했다고 밝혔다.

슈머크 사장은 경제 침체로 인해 사람들이 가정용 PC를 교체하는 사이클이 평균 3년에서 4년 수준으로 늘어난 것을 인정하면서도, (소비자들이) 그 공백을 태블릿PC로 채우고 있다고 말했다.

그는 PC시장이 이미 충분히 발전했고 상대적으로 안정기에 접어든 반면, 모바일 컴퓨터 업계는 스크린 크기, 입력방식 등을 비롯한 여러가지 형태적 변수가 작용하고 있어 귀추가 주목된다고 의견을 밝혔다.

또한 그는 “앞으로 태블릿PC와 휴대전화 간의 더 많은 컨버전스가 이루어질 것”이라고 전망을 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
