California lawmakers have passed a bill that could make the state the second in the United States to approve self-driving cars on its roads.

The bill, passed unanimously by the state senate, will go to Gov. Jerry Brown, who is expected to sign it into law, TG Daily reported Friday.

Under the law, the California Department of Motor Vehicles would be required to create standards and licensing procedures for autonomous vehicles.

"The bill would permit autonomous vehicles to be operated or tested on the public roads in this state pending the adoption of safety standards and performance requirements that would be adopted under this bill," the legislation reads.

Until standards are in place its not known precisely under what conditions driverless cars would be allowed to operate, although it's likely a driver would be required to be behind the steering wheel at all times, as in Nevada, the other state to have considered such a law.

Google has been testing autonomous vehicles on California roads, with engineering lead Chris Urmson saying in a blog post the company's cars have completed more than 300,000 miles of testing without an accident. (UPI)

스스로 운전하는 진짜 ‘자동’차, 차도로?

자동차가 스스로 운전을 하는 무인자동차 (autonomous vehicle)가 미국 네바다에 이어 캘리포니아에서도 허가되었다.

현지언론은 지난달 31일 (현지시간) 캘리포니아 주 의회가 만장일치로 무인자동차를 허가하는 법안을 통과시켰다고 보도했다.

캘리포니아 주지사 제리 브라운이 예상대로 이 법안에 서명하면 주 교통부는 무인자동차에 대한 규격과 면허취득 절차 등을 만들게 된다. 또한 법안이 통과됨에 따라 무인자동차들이 공공도로에서 시험주행을 할 수 있는 길이 열린 셈이다.

그러나 일반도로에서 운전자가 없이 자동차가 스스로 주행하는 일은 한동안 없을 것으로 보인다. 캘리포니아 이전에 법안을 통과시킨 네바다의 경우 무인자동차가 주행하는 도중에는 항상 운전자가 운전석에 앉아 있어야 한다는 법규가 있는데 캘리포니아 역시 이를 도입할 것으로 예상되기 때문이다.

한편 무인자동차를 개발한 구글 측에서는 인공지능과 컴퓨터 센서, GPS 기술을 이용해 스스로 운전할 수 있도록 개발된 이 자동차가 사고 없이 48만 2천 킬로미터에 달하는 시험주행을 마쳤다고 밝혔다.
