The U.S. Air force tried to build a supersonic flying saucer-like aircraft in the 1950s, a recently declassified document revealed.

A document made in 1956, entitled “Project 1794, Final Development Summary Report” and disclosed by the National Archives, showed a plan to build a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

If constructed as initially designed, the craft could reach a top speed of Mach 4, and fly at an altitude of 30.5 kilometers with a maximum range of about 1,852 kilometers.

The U.S. government had a contract with a now-defunct Canadian company Avro Aircraft, which estimated it would cost $3.17 million -- roughly $26.6 million (28.9 billion won) in today’s currency -- to build the flying saucer.

The report stated that the Project 1794 went as far as to make a prototype of the saucer, known as the Avrocar. The project, however, faltered after the abysmal performance of prototype models.

Far from the initial goal of 30.5 kilometers, the saucer barely floated 90 centimeters off the ground, and flew at just 56.3 kilometers per hour. The project was ultimately canceled in 1961.

이 비행기는 마치 공상과학에 등장하는 UFO (미확인비행물체)와 생김새가 비슷한데 마하 4의 속도까지 도달하는 것을 목표로 하고 있었다. 또한 30.6 킬로미터 고도에서 최고 1852 킬로미터까지 비행할 수 있도록 계획되어 있었다.

개발을 맡은 캐나다 회사 에이브로 에어크래프트는 약 317만 달러의 비용이 들 것으로 예상했는데, 이 금액은 오늘날로 환산하면 2천6백6십만 달러 (한화 약 289억원) 정도이다.

프로젝트 1794는 프로토타입 (대량 생산에 앞서서 제작하는 원형)을 제작하는 단계에까지 이르렀다. 그러나 프로토타입 모델의 형편없는 성능으로 인해 여러 문제에 부딪혔다.

에이브로카(Avrocar)라고 명명된 이 모델은 지상에서 고작 90cm 떠올라 56.3 킬로미터의 속도로 비행했는데 이는 애초 목표와는 크게 동떨어진 것이었다.

결국 프로젝트는 1961년에 취소되었고, 에이브런 역시 그 다음해에 문을 닫고 말았다.
