European astronomers say they've discovered a planet about the mass of the Earth orbiting a star in the Alpha Centauri system, the nearest star system to Earth.

Alpha Centauri, only 4.3 light-years away, is actually a triple star -- a system consisting of two stars similar to the Sun orbiting close to each other, designated Alpha Centauri A and B, and a more distant and faint red component known as Proxima Centauri.

The planet was detected using the HARPS instrument on the 12-foot telescope at the European Southern Observatory La Silla Observatory in Chile.

Since the nineteenth century astronomers have speculated about planets orbiting these close cosmic neighbors, but searches of increasing precision had revealed nothing -- until now.

"Our observations extended over more than four years using the HARPS instrument and have revealed a tiny, but real, signal from a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B every 3.2 days," lead study author Xavier Dumusque of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland said in a release from ESO headquarters in Garching, Germany.

Alpha Centauri B is very similar to our sun but slightly smaller and less bright, astronomers said.

"This is the first planet with a mass similar to Earth ever found around a star like the Sun. Its orbit is very close to its star and it must be much too hot for life as we know it," co-author Stephane Udry of the Geneva Observatory said, "but it may well be just one planet in a system of several." 유럽 천문학자들이 최근 지구와 가장 인접한 알파 센터우리 성계에서 지구와 비슷한 질량을 가진 행성이 발견되었다고 발표했다.

지구로부터 4.3 광년 떨어진 곳에 위치한 알파 센터우리는 태양과 유사한 항성 알파 센터우리 A와 B, 그리고 프록시마 센터우리 (프록시마성)으로 불리는 더 작은 별로 이루어져 있다.

유럽 남방천문대의 천문학자들은 칠레의 라 실라 천문대에서 HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher)라고 불리는 장비를 이용해 이 행성을 발견했다.

19세기부터 천문학자들은 이러한 인근 천체 주위를 도는 행성이 있을 것이라고 추측해왔으나 실제로 발견된 것은 이번이 처음이다.

“HARPS 장비를 이용해 4년 넘게 관측을 해온 결과 알파 센터우리 B 주위를 3.2일 주기로 공전하는 행성으로부터 작은, 하지만 확실한 신호를 수신하는데 성공했습니다”라고 스위스 제네바 관측소의 자비에르 두무스크가 독일에 있는 유럽 남방천문대 본부에서 발표했다.

그의 동료 스테파느 우드리는 “태양과 유사한 항성 주변을 공전하는 지구와 비슷한 질량의 행성을 찾은 것은 이번이 처음”이라면서 이번 발견의 의의를 설명했다.

그는 이 행성이 항성에 너무 가까워서 생명이 존재하기 힘들 정도로 뜨겁지만 주변에 다른 행성들이 있을 가능성도 있다고 덧붙였다. 이는 물이 존재할 수 있는 서식가능지역 내에 행성이 있을 수도 있다는 것을 의미한다.
