A passenger boat caught fire in waters off the country's southern coastal city of Yeosu early Tuesday, but all people on board were rescued, the Coast Guard said.
The 4,000-ton ferry Seolbong, which departed from the port city of Busan late Monday for Jeju Island, was traveling along the south coast near Yeosu, some 455 kilometers south of Seoul, when it caught fire at 1:20 a.m., prompting the Coast Guard and the Navy to dispatch dozens of patrol ships to rescue a total of 128 passengers and crew members on board, according to officials.
Seven people who were slightly injured while being rescued have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, the officials added.
It was not immediately clear what started the fire, but a crewman told the Coast Guard that while on patrol he saw smoke suddenly wafting from below deck where the freight room is located.
An investigation into the exact cause is under way, according to the Coast Guard. (Yonhap News)

6일 오전 1시20분께 전남 여수시 백도 인근 해상에서 부산을 출발해 제주로 향하던 4천t급 여객선 설봉호에 불이 났다.
해경과 해군은 경비함 등 23척을 급파, 사고 발생 2시간여만인 오전 3시20분께 승객 128명을 전원 구조했다.
불이 나자 승객들은 신속히 구명조끼를 착용하고 불이 나고 있는 여객선 뒤쪽을 피해 앞쪽으로 옮겨 구조를 기다렸다.
다행히 구조현장의 파고가 1m 내외로 높지 않았고 바람도 초속 6~8m 정도여서 구조작업에 큰 어려움은 없었다.
경비함으로 옮겨지는 과정에서 일부 승객들이 찰과상을 입었지만 화재와 연기로 인한 부상은 없었다고 해경은 밝혔다.
다친 승객들은 여수항으로 옮겨져 인근 병원에서 치료를 받고 있다.
설봉호는 전날 오후 7시 부산항에서 출항, 이날 새벽 6시 제주에 입항할 예정이었다.
해경은 "화물창에서 불이 났다"는 승객들의 진술을 토대로 정확한 화재 원인을 조사하고 있다.
해경의 한 관계자는 "새벽 시간에 바다 위 여객선에서 불이 났지만 승조원과 승객들의 차분한 대처와 신속한 구조가 어우러져 다행히 큰 사고로 이어지지 않았다"고 밝혔다. (연합뉴스)
