Samsung Electronics Co. has released the latest curved smart device on home soil, the company said Tuesday, following the launch of its twin model Galaxy Note 4 last month amid concern over the tech firm's dwindling profit. 

The Galaxy Note Edge, a cross between a smartphone and tablet PC, features a curved display on the edge of the device that is designed to allow more flexibility and multiple functions. 

The phablet is available for purchase via SK Telecom Co. starting Tuesday. KT Corp. is scheduled to launch it on Wednesday, Samsung said.

The factory price of the Note Edge is 1.06 million won (US$1,015), it added. 

The 5.6-inch smart device comes in two colors: charcoal black and frost white. It is powered by Google Inc.'s Android KitKat 4.4 and features a Quad HD Super active mode organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display, which enables the edge of the screen to curve to one side. 

Samsung upgraded the cameras for the Note Edge to the same specs as the ones installed in the flagship Galaxy Note 4 - a 16-megapixel camera on the front and a 37-megapixel on the rear -- as opposed to the initial lower-end features presented at the showcase in Germany in September.

The phablet runs on a 3,000mAh battery and provides memory capacity of 32 gigabytes. 

The Galaxy Note Edge debuted as Samsung's ambitious innovation but failed to garner applause from markets here and abroad as it had problems such as being inconvenient for left-handed users. 

Samsung Electronics, the world's top smartphone maker, is announcing its third-quarter earnings Thursday, which many analysts expect to hit the bottom level for the first time in three years. (Yonhap)
