South Korea and the International Telecommunications Union agreed on Friday to jointly support developing countries in setting up national spectrum management plans through two projects.

South Korea will provide assistance to countries in the Caribbean in what will be the nation’s first ITU project in the Latin American region, the organization said.

It also signed an agreement to extend its support for the Asia-Pacific region to design and implement new spectrum management.

South Korea’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning will contribute 150 million won ($137,400) to each project, according to the ITU.

“As the leading nation in high speed internet connectivity worldwide, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) is in an excellent position to share its experiences ... and help reduce the digital divide,” said Brahima Sanou, director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau.

South Korea has been hosting the 19th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, also referred to as the PP-14, in its southernmost port city of Busan since Oct. 20. The conferences close today. (Yonhap)
