Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva will visit Seoul this week for summit talks with South Korean President Park Geun-hye on expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and other areas, Park's office said Wednesday.

The Portuguese leader will visit Seoul for three days starting on Saturday at Park's invitation, according to the office.

"President Cavaco Silva's official visit will be an opportunity to build on the trust and bonds between the two countries' leaders and serve as an opportunity for the expansion of mutually beneficial bilateral trade and the development of economic cooperation," the office said.

The two leaders will hold summit talks on Monday to discuss ways to increase bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy, aviation, shipping and tourism, among other areas, it said.

They are also expected to exchange views on the political situation on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia and Europe.

Cavaco Silva will be the first Portuguese president to officially visit Seoul, according to the office. (Yonhap)
