May 13, 2015 - 20:31 By Kim Young-won
South Korea’s largest mobile carrier SK Telecom said Wednesday that the sales of its portable projector for smartphones, Smart Beam, reached 200,000, a record high in the global market for pico projectors.

Launched in February 2013, the cubical projector measuring at 4.5 centimeters has been released in 12 countries including China and Brazil and around 100,000 units were sold annually, according to the Korean telecom firm.

“The Smart Beam, which is also being sold at in-flight duty-free shops of global air carriers, including Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific, is one of the popular duty-free items,” an SKT official said.

SKT worked with a Korean start-up to develop the smart projector and promote marketing for the device.

“The Smart Beam is a prime example to prove that an ‘appcessory’ (a combination of application and accessory) for smartphones can appeal to customers,” said Park Chul-soon, head of SKT’s convergence business office, vowing to showcase innovative products and services down the road.

In order to celebrate the record sales of the pico projector, SKT started a promotion to give away discount coupons for customers in Korea who buy the smart projector from Thursday to the end of this month.
