South Korea's top tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Monday it has sold 1 million units of its Tizen-powered smartphones, casting a brighter outlook over the non-Android operating system.
  

Samsung's Indian subsidiary said the sales of the Z1, which hit shelves in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in January this year, has reached 1 million units as of Wednesday.
  

Tizen is an open-source operating system for smart devices being promoted by Samsung, Intel, Huawei and other global tech players. Samsung has been playing a leading role in its development, applying it in some of its wearable devices such as Gear smartwatches.
  

The 4-inch Samsung Z1 is powered by the Tizen 2.3 platform and comes with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Weighing only 112 grams, it is equipped with a 3.1-megapixel rear camera and a 1,500 mAh battery.
  

The price tag on the device is only 5,700 Indian rupees ($89.14).
  

Industry sources said Samsung may roll out a follow-up model of the Z1 within this year that boasts improved features, but with a higher price estimated around 8,000 and 15,000 Indian rupees. (Yonhap)
