지난 회에 이어, 유용한 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<성장, 증가>

I’d like to point out that our revenue forecast was recently revised upward despite net losses across the industry.

산업 전반이 적자를 기록하고 있지만 우리는 최근에 매출 예상치를 상향 조정했다는 점을 강조하고 싶습니다.

SITUATION 수치를 상향 조정할 때

평범하게 Our forecast was changed to reflect the decreasing prices in raw materials.

영어답게 Our forecast was revised upward to reflect the decreasing prices in raw materials.

수치를 상향 조정하거나 하향 조정하는 경우 수정한다는 뜻인 revise 다음에 upward나 downward를 붙여 표현하면 유용합니다. 상향 조정의 경우 revise upward, 하향 조정의 경우 revise downward라고 하면 되죠.

Even though our company has only produced two products up to this point, we have many more products in the pipeline.

저희 회사가 현재까지 2종의 상품만을 생산했지만, 앞으로 더 많은 상품을 출시할 것입니다.

SITUATION 신규 사업, 제품 등을 머지않아 선보일 예정일 때

평범하게 We have several amazing new projects yet to be introduced.

영어답게 We have several amazing new projects in the pipeline.

‘아직 파이프 라인 안에 있다’라는 뜻인 in the pipeline은, 아직 밖으로 나오지는 않았지만 앞으로 나올 것이 많다는 뜻입니다. 새로운 계획, 서비스, 상품 등을 소개할 예정이라고 할 때 쓸 수 있는 표현입니다.

Our business recorded net profit last quarter for the first time. If the sales reach a critical mass, profitability will also improve.

저희 회사는 지난 분기에 처음으로 순이익을 기록했습니다. 매출이 의미있는 수준에 도달하면 수익성도 개선될 것입니다.

SITUATION 사업이 의미 있는 수준에 도달한다고 할 때

평범하게 The sales reached a critical point.

영어답게 The sales reached a critical mass.

critical mass는 원래 ‘임계질량’이라는 의미의 물리학 용어지만, 비즈니스에서 reach a critical mass라고 하면 ‘판매 수치 등이 다음 단계로 도약할 수 있는 수준에 도달한다’라는 뜻입니다. 사업이 아직 만족할 수준에 도달하지는 못했지만 어느 단계만 돌파하면 빠르게 성장할 것이라고 말할 때 유용한 표현이죠.

<감소, 둔화>

Due to lagging consumer spending this quarter, our revenue stream seems to be leveling off.

이번 분기는 소비둔화 때문에 매출이 정체되는 것 같습니다.

SITUATION 성장이 정체될 때

평범하게 The growth hit the peak and started stabilizing.

영어답게 The growth hit the peak and started leveling off.

‘레벨이 다르다’라는 말을 흔히 쓰기 때문에 level의 의미를 혼동하기 쉬운데, level은 원래 평평하다는 뜻입니다. 그래서 level off는 평평하게 되다, 즉 ‘정체된다’는 의미죠. 예를 들면, ‘성장이 정점을 찍은 후 정체되기 시작했다’는 The growth hit the peak and started leveling off.처럼 표현할 수 있습니다.

A: As our expansion into Asia and Europe was unsuccessful, our investors are demanding a revised long-term plan for the company. What should we tell them?

B: We should tell them that we plan to scale back our international branches and will re-focus on the domestic market.

A: 아시아와 유럽 진출이 성공적이지 못해 투자자들이 장기 계획을 수정하라 요구하고 있습니다. 어떻게 얘기해야 할까요?

B: 해외 지사의 규모를 축소하고 국내 시장에 다시 초점을 맞출 것이라고 말해야겠어.

SITUATION 규모를 축소하는 경우

평범하게 We are looking to reduce the size of our operations overseas.

영어답게 We are looking to scale back our operations overseas.

scale은 ‘눈금’이라는 뜻 외에 ‘정도’나 ‘수준’이라는 의미도 지닙니다. scale back은 눈금을 다시 뒤로 돌린다(back), 즉 ‘줄인다’는 뜻이죠. 규모를 축소하거나 생산량을 줄이는 것을 나타내기에 적합한 표현입니다.

A: I’m really worried that sales are at a standstill.

B: Then we should advertise a sale and discount our prices up to 25%.

A: 판매가 정체라 정말 걱정이야.

B: 세일을 한다고 광고하고 25%까지 할인해야겠어.

SITUATION 정체를 표현할 때

평범하게 Our sales will stop growing in a few months.

영어답게 Our sales will be at a standstill in a few months.

정체를 나타내는 표현은 hit a wall, reach a deadlock 외에도 많이 있는데, be at a standstill도 잘 등장합니다. 매출이나 이익이 정체 상태인 것을 나타내기에 적합한 표현이죠.
